Duff starts off by looking at the various legends about the Holy Grail, arguing that over the centuries what is important is their similarities & not their differences.

A story told for 1500 years, said to come from the Goths who migrated into Europe 2000 years ago. Until early 20th Century King Theoderic’s ancestors would meet twice a year at the Solstices in the Bolzano Rose Garden to commemorate the finding of King Laurin’s Rosengarten.
To many the Holy Grail is associated with King Arthur. Taliesin a 6th Century Celt bard sang of King Arthur in the Courts of Ancient Briton. They are recorded in a Middle Welsh manuscript, the Book of Taliesin.
In the Red Book of Hergest and
and the White Book of Rhydderch stories of the the four legends of Mabinogion are told which include tales of King Arthur searching for something divine & they refer to cups, chalices & cauldrons that have magical powers. There is no mention of a Grail.
Taliesin says the Arthurian cauldron could be found at the mythical sacred place called Caer Pendryvvan (Castle Pendragon - Arthur’s surname & the name of the original English flag) & Caer Sidi (Fairy Fortress or Revolving Castle)
The first story of a Grail comes in 1180 AD. La Comte du Graal written by Chretien des Troyes recounts an Arthurian Knight Perceval who meets the Fisher King at a feast. One of the dishes is a Graal- a flat dish - holding precious stones & another is a sword dripping with blood.

5 years on a hermit (a relative of all in the story who admonishes Perceval for his lack of prayers) tells him that it was the Fisher King's father that the Grail served - & when it does there is a single wafer on it. It is such a Holy thing that it is all that's needed for food.
This aspect of personal development of the Graal tallies with Taliesin who says that the bardic basin "inspires poetic genius, confers wisdom, reveals to its worshippers knowledge of the future, answers the mysteries of the world & carries the entire treasury of human knowledge."
The next is of Peredur, written before or after Chretien’s of the same King -in the same story this time the wafer is replaced by a severed head. In both cases no questions are asked. Peredur is admonished by an old woman for not asking about the bloodied spear, severed head etc.
Is this putting across the Gnostic Christian view about developing & growing one’s own inner spirituality? Does the host in the form of the wafer serve us or what was then the Roman Catholic Church? What is the nature of the enchantment on the castle? Why do people not question?
Robert de Boron in the late 13th C wrote The History of the Grail. Here the emphasis was on the Grail and not Perceval. He introduced Joseph of Arimathea into the story with a drinking vessel that caught the last drops of Jesus and further moves towards a cup than a cauldron.
That’s the first Grail Chretien cycle. The second is the Perlesvaus. Here again the protagonist fails to ask who the Grail serves. Now lots of different castles are involved in the story with names such as the Castle of Enquiry, the Turning Castle & the Castle of Lost Souls.
“If it is of God will” is often used by the Knights & references are made to the Knights improving themselves. The Grail is now invisible; only good people see it. There are arguments in the land over old & new law & the power of rejuvenation is associated with the Grail’s powers

It is this version of the story that is used by Thomas Mallory in ‘Le Mort d’Arthur’
Over to Germany now in 1205AD where Wolfram Von Eschenbach wrote Parzival, in which there is commentary as well as the story. He calls it a Gral. There is a Middle Eastern aspect to this version and immortality is added to the eternal nourishment, rejuvenation & healing powers.
He also emphasised that timing is important for the Grail to be seen - planetary movements and the constellations of stars are important. Someone called Kyot has looked for the Gral -it was taken from the ME to Europe by a Christian group called Pure’s Life’s aka Cathars.
Nicolas Flamel d.1418 described The Philosopher’s Stone which had the same properties as the Celtic Cauldrons. In 1378 he visited Toledo in Spain with a rare 21 page book which was written in code. A sage there told him the book was of ‘Abramelin the Mage’ with instructions
With how to make this Stone linked to immortality & rejuvenation, which Flamel spent years trying to decode. In 1612 a translation of the recipe was published: The Hieroglyphic Figures. It is this that leads to the idea that the Grail is not in fact a stone but related to a stone
Back in Germany, now in the 1930s Otto Rahn read Von Eschenbach’s Parzival and became convinced that the Grail was the sacred stone that the Cathars had had at Chateaux Montségur. He visited Languedoc and returned in 1933 to write Crusade against the Grail

Ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Persia, India & China. They had knowledge that was lost to the West when the library at Alexandria was destroyed in successive fires in 48BC, 272 AD & 391AD. Some knights learned Aramaic & translated scrolls that came their way. Some information
filtered back to Europe to eg von Eschenbach who used Arabic names for the planets in his tales. That planets are involved in the grail story indicates timings are too. The knights appear to have been most influenced by the Sufis with their idea of Universal Truths but also other
Islamic sects such as the Druzes & Yezidhi who also have roots in Zoroastrianism & Judaism. This group in October celebrate the Festival of Jam (King Jamshid) or Cup, which has supernatural powers. The equivalent Persian holiday is the Golden Age of Immortals.
Some can look into the cup and see what is going on anywhere in the world, as well as all 7 heavens of the Universe and into the future. The Persian King Kai Khosrow had a magical cup & the Scythians whose lands went as far as China had a magical chalice. In all cases the chalice
can only seen by one without a flaw. All report too of magical stones that fall to the earth - meteorites. We hear of stones such as the Cintamani in Hindu & Buddhists tales which grant the holders free wishes - could this be the Grail stone?
In the Al-Aqua mosque next to the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem is the Even ha’shettiya stone which also fell from heaven and is said to be the Axis Mundi - a term which will reappear later.
