THREAD: A new AP-NORC poll finds an American public deeply pessimistic about the direction of the country and dissatisfied with President Trump and the federal government’s handling of the pandemic. apne.ws/hzwGXr1
@AP_Politics Just 31% of Americans approve of Trump’s leadership on the pandemic, a significant drop from 44% approval in March, when the virus began spreading through the U.S.
The AP-NORC poll also finds roughly two-thirds of Americans saying the government is not doing enough to help individual Americans financially. Democrats are about twice as likely as Republicans to say that.
@AP_Politics Overall, just 23% think the U.S. is heading in the right direction. Trump must contend with Americans’ persistently negative view of the country’s direction as he asks voters to stay the course instead of handing the reins over to Joe Biden. apne.ws/hefx4q9

Why does The Associated Press call U.S. elections?
Unlike in other democracies, the Founding Fathers didn’t establish a government agency for counting the vote, and the states all do it a little differently, so the @AP counts the votes.
If the GOP wins back the House, Democratic priorities like access to abortion, addressing climate change and stricter gun control would immediately be sidelined.
Most of Biden’s agenda would be effectively dead for the final two years of his term.
While the Senate could tilt either way, the majority party is still likely to have the slimmest of margins.
That means Biden could find a bit more common ground there, no matter who is in charge.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy won reelection in close race against Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli. His victory spares Democrats the loss of a 2nd gubernatorial seat. apne.ws/0wJ58is
Ciattarelli waged a formidable campaign in the deep blue state. His spending nearly equaled Murphy's and outpaced the GOP's performance 4 years ago.

Youngkin’s win in Virginia ends the GOP’s 12-year losing streak in statewide races in Virginia. apne.ws/1St2WT2
It is certain to add to Democratic anxiety as President Biden's legislative agenda is stalled, his approval ratings are slipping and the party's narrow majority in Congress is on the line in next year’s midterm elections. apne.ws/aPK9S2T
Minneapolis voters reject replacing its police department with a new public safety unit. The result comes more than a year after George Floyd’s death launched a movement to defund or abolish police across the country. apne.ws/Kn210ly
The debate brought national attention to the election, as well as a river of out-of-state money seeking to influence a contest that could shape changes in policing elsewhere, too. apne.ws/7bXATQL
The ballot proposal had roots in the abolish-the-police movement that erupted after Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer last year. The debate over racial justice in policing brought national attention to Tuesday’s vote. apne.ws/sPP649N
President Biden is delivering his first address to Congress on the eve of his 100th day in office. Biden will declare the nation is "turning peril into possibility, crisis into opportunity."
Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are seated behind President Biden - the first time in U.S. history that two women are on the stage during a president's address to Congress.
Where does President Biden stand on his key promises? This @AP interactive takes you through how Biden has fared in his first 100 days, from those completed to those not yet started.
