10 Stoic Principles For Unshakable Discipline

(A thread 🧵)

If you are unable to maintain your discipline for more than 3 days,
live by these wise words.

1/11 ⬇️
1. Start with finding your purpose:

Your biggest source of inspiration is the incentive for your drive.

Know thy “why”.

Once you find compelling reasons to take actions, commit yourself to see that activity through to the very end.
2. Count on yourself:

You won’t achieve anything without conviction that you CAN.

Have a practical plan.

Then be committed to performing the small actions that will help you achieve your goals.
3. Show up everyday:

Self discipline is developing the habit of consistency.

Showing up everyday, regardless of how you feel, builds your mental endurance.

Never let your momentum decline completely to zero.

A single step forward is better than stagnancy.
4. Practice voluntary hardship:

Deliberately put yourself through uncomfortable situations.

This builds up your mental fortitude and physical endurance.

Once you overcome the need for comfort, discipline will become much easier.

* Fast 🥘
* Train 🏋️
* Get up early 😴
5. Practice dichotomy of control:

If you can’t control your emotions, you can’t control your discipline.

Reinforce to yourself what’s within your control and accept what’s out of your control.

Avoid getting worked up over little things.

Avoid pointless arguments.
6. Get rid of victim mindset 🧏‍♂️:

* Avoid self pity.

* Stop complaining.

* Do you job, without whining.

* Stop blaming others for your life situations.

* Expect more from yourself, expect less from others.

* Stop wishing things were different. They aren’t - deal with it.
7. Practice delayed gratification 🙇:

We live in a consumerist society that glorifies instant gratification.

Train your ability to resist temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward.

A pleasure delayed is a pleasure enhanced.
8. Ignore naysayers 🤚:

Actively seek honest feedback from those your respect.

Tune out those that:

* Criticize you.
* Objectify you.
* Oppose you.

Only you know what’s best for you.
9. Find wise people to emulate:

Find good role models.

Ask yourself:

* Who is doing this right now?

* Who has successfully achieved this goal?

* Who has mastered this habit?

* Who has developed the necessary discipline in this area?

* What can I learn from their methods?
10. Honestly review your day:

* Identify strengths and weaknesses.

* Self scrutinize yourself daily.

* Measure daily progress.

* Introspect and reflect.

* Be accountable.
