Ikigai - How To Discover Your Purpose

(A thread 🧵)

The Japanese word Ikigai, refers to having a direction in life, or that which makes one's life worthwhile.

Here’s how to use it to determine your calling 👇🏿👇🏿 Image
1) Do What You Are Good At

Your skill set may be based on;

Nature: Your gifts, forte and talents. What you do easier and better than than others.

Nuture: Finding a skill or profession you are interested in and gaining mastery of it through long term consistent practice.
2) Do What You Love To Do

Life is too short to indulge in activities that make your dreadful.

Do what makes you come alive.
If you grow disinterested in a particular field, be courageous enough to pursue what excites you.

Trust your intuition, let it guide you.
3) Do What The World Needs

Our activities must in one way or the other make the world a better place. Image
4) Do What’s Lucrative

Money buys you freedom and comfort.

Money pays the rent and sustains your family.

Money fuels your drive - so to make your efforts sustainable, they must generate income.
What you love + your skills = passion

What you love + your purpose = mission

Your purpose + source of income = vocation

Your skills + source of income = profession

Your Ikigai is the combination of all dimensions.

Naval, Elon Musk and Charlie Munger have attributed their successes to mental models.

Here are 7 useful models that will make you a better thinker...
1 -When in doubt, say NO

If you are unsure whether or not you should accept a job, marry someone, accept a business partner - then the answer is no.

Forget the pros and cons. Say yes only when you FEEL certain.
2 - Seek understanding, not complexity

When learning something new, try to explain it to a 10-year old (or imagine you have to).

If you are unable to pass across your knowledge in simple terms then you haven't learnt anything, you simple memorized.

Q: “I feel like nobody gets me. What to do?”

M: Firstly - stop talking to those who are hell bent on misunderstanding you.
You aren’t a one in 8 billion specimen - Whatever you are interested in, others are too.

And you can find them in two ways...
1 - Create contents around the things you are passionate about and wait for your tribe to find you. Be authentic & true to yourself.

2 - Seek out groups / communities where you’d be loved and accepted for who you are.

You’ve been conditioned to see happiness as something to chase, rather than something you can create.

Here are 3 hard truths that will change your perspective on happiness (no. 3 will shock you)...
1 - Stop chasing happiness

The danger of obsessively seeking happiness externally is that it makes you vulnerable to harmful vices, mimetic desires, and self-induced mental illnesses.
Drugs, stimulants & depressants are popular because everyone’s desperate to get a dose of happiness by any means necessary; but that’s just unhappiness on makeup.

Q: “How to meditate and get it right?”

Marv: Meditation requires no technique, so there’s no way to get it wrong.

Read on...
Meditation is not a mission, so you must be willing to let go of any desired results.

Your mind will find this difficult to accept because it is always trying label everything or to achieve something.
Effortlessness is counterintuitive to the mind’s programming (which is why it’s the only way out of the maze).

Any technique you employ to subdue the mind will only agitate it.
