The man clearly said "Spygate." And Trump—who says "Spygate" often—clearly heard something else, which is why he smiled and said, "Let's be nice" and "only in North Carolina." Did he think the man called Obama a monkey? It'd certainly explain his reaction.

1⃣ If you're saying the man said "monkey," you're a liar.
2⃣ If you're saying Trump heard "Spygate," you're a liar.
3⃣ If you're saying Trump *absolutely* would respond *exactly* this way if someone in a crowd called President Obama a "monkey"...you've been paying attention.

4⃣ The reason Trump says "Biden" after he says "Let's be nice" to the man in the crowd is obviously—and without question—because he was finishing his sentence, which he'd left hanging at the word "Biden." The word Trump heard had nothing to do with Biden, nor did Trump think so.
5⃣ You bet your ass it's major news—not a "gotcha" moment but a "we refuse to normalize this" moment—if a sitting president, at his national nominating convention, *thinks* he's heard someone call President Obama a vile racial slur and in response smiles twice and jokes about it.
6⃣ I understand those who say—and many who I care about deeply are in this camp—that Trump "benefits" whenever he causes chaos. I'm sure (to a degree) that's true. But I refuse to normalize anything this man does that's profoundly damaging to America just because I'm tired of it.
