The Christians, who first attempted to correct Thirukkural, have now dared to hijack Thiruvalluvar himself! Millions of dollars have been spent on this project. It should come as little surprise that soon, Thiruvalluvar is to be portrayed in a film, as the disciple of St Thomas!
A fanatic evangelist, Deivanayagam by name, claims emphatically that he has successfully established, that Thirukkural is a Christian work. The dominant churches in Tamil Nadu also brazenly extend support to this fallacious propaganda by Deivanayagam
‘We the Tamils hate Christians for their customs of killing cows and eating its meat. They don’t wash after ablutions, drink highly intoxicating alcohols. They don’t perform the final rites of the dead, for salvation, do not celebrate marriages’. -Tamil native on Christianity
Ziegenbalg had exhibited arrogance. He himself had written about his audacious act of breaking idols outside an ‘Amman’ temple. ‘It is our government’; this was the basis of his impudence. The scheming nature of the missionaries has been passed on to the Indian Christians.
A French priest by name Jean Venant Bouchet (1655 – 1732) did missionary work, religious propaganda, for 40 years in South India. Arriving at Pondicherry in 1689, it is recorded that up until 1702, he had converted 20,000 people to Christianity.
Bouchet had tried to establish a church in the isle of Srirangam too. The Hindus had objected to the church already built opposite to the Perumal Temple.
When the law enforcement officers ordered the Christians to vacate the church, they obtained a local court stay. Finally, a Vinayaka idol was placed inside the church. The Christians was then demolished the church themselves.
The history of printing in India reveals a sad story of the
suppression of all native enterprise by the British, tutored by the missionaries. The East India Company had a law which prohibited the natives from opening any printing press, or from printing any book.
The admirers among the native Christians say that the
missionaries did great service to Tamil through the introduction of printing. But this was done with an ulterior motive.
When it came to printing, only the missionaries were encouraged by the Company. Printing in the local languages helped the missionaries in their conversion work, and the Company sought proselytization.
“The divisive strategy employed directly or in the sly by the British rulers who were strengthening their hold in India, was the reason for the creation of the aryan dravidan dissection that acquired a great socio-political dimension”
- K. Kailasapathy, SriLankan Tamil scholar.
The word ‘Tamil’ was used to mean ‘Hindu’. This was before the days of Caldwell (Prior to 1542). Even now, in Thanjavur district, there is a habit of using the word ‘Tamil’ to mean ‘Hindu’. People can be heard saying, ‘He is a Tamil doing business with a Muslim.’
The Sacred Heart Church was built in 1908, a riot erupted
between the high caste Christians and the oppressed Dalits. The government interfered, ensured order and closed the church. The rights of the oppressed Dalits were refused in the old church too.
Riots continued, the old Church by name ‘Adhimetriraasanam’ was also closed. Both the Churches were closed for six months. The Padre then conducted and inquiry and gave the verdict that the oppressed people could enter certain ‘specified’ places inside the church.
Later, it was decided that the oppressed Dalits would be allowed inside the main hall, when the place was not being used by the upper castes
In days long gone (and even today), in some places in Kerala, Syrian Christians and the converts from the lower castes worshipped in separate churches. At one place, on a Sunday, the missionaries brought all the converts into the main Cathedral church.
But as the converts entered through the front door, the other Christians jumped out through the windows! The Dalit problem today is an extension of this attitude.
Catholic Christianity, which was the religion of the oppressed castes in the beginning, compromised with the elite castes of Tamil Nadu, in due course. As a result, the Catholics of the oppressed castes became ‘second rate’ Catholics.
In the beginning, the Catholic Diocese was not prepared to allow individuals from all castes to become Priests and Nuns. Hence, the oppressed castes were refused admission in schools, which produce them.
