Bihar has become the first state to release data from a caste-based survey. The report indicates 36 per cent of the population are from Extremely Backward Classes, 27.1 per cent are from Backward Classes, 19.7 per cent are from Scheduled Castes and 1.7 per cent are from Scheduled Tribes. The general population is 15.5 per cent. The state's total population is over 13.1 crore.
The survey also said the Yadav community - the group to which Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav belongs - is the largest sub-group, accounting for 14.27 per cent of all OBC categories.
The report's fallout, which will almost certainly kick-up a political row, will likely also include calls to increase quotas for OBCs, which is capped now at 27 per cent. According to the data - released months before the 2024 Lok Sabha election, they are now 63.1 per cent of the state.
Kunwar Danish Ali, Lok Sabha MP from Mayawati's party BSP, today said he is, with a heavy heart, considering "leaving" the parliament if no action is taken against BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri, who used communal slurs against him inside the lower house last evening. If this can happen to me, what will happen to a common man? An emotional Danish Ali said, on the verge of breaking down on camera, adding that he couldn't sleep all night as he felt like his brain was about to 'explode'.
"Was this special session (of the parliament) called to attack elected MPs by linking them to their community? This has shamed the entire country. We will see whether his party will take any action against him or promote him. This is hate speech," Kunwar Danish Ali told NDTV.
The BSP MP said he submitted a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker demanding action against Mr Bidhuri, who made the objectionable remarks during a discussion in Lok Sabha on the "success of Chandrayaan".

Today, the Income Authorities conducted a survey on the BBC premises in Delhi, in view of the BBC’s deliberate non-compliance with the Transfer Pricing Rules and its vast diversion of profits.
It is pertinent to note that the above exercise conducted by the tax authorities, is called “survey” not search/raid as per the provisions of the Income Tax Act. Such surveys are routinely conducted and are not to be confused to be in the nature of a search/raid.
In the case of the BBC, there has been persistent non-compliance with the abovementioned rules for years. As a result of the same, several notices have been issued to the BBC.
Income Tax officials landed at the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai this morning for searches, weeks after a huge controversy over the UK national broadcaster's documentary series on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and allegations linked to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The taxmen were carrying out a "survey" over allegations of international taxation and transfer pricing irregularities involving the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), said sources.
Around 20 tax officials searched the BBC's Delhi office. In Mumbai, BBC Studios that deals with production was searched.
