It can also be contracted when:
- One eats food (cooked or raw) that has been contaminated by the bacteria

- One has oral or anal sex with a carrier of the bacteria.
- One uses a toilet contaminated with the bacteria and does not wash their hands.
- One drinks contaminated milk (and its products.)

Make sure to wash all foods thoroughly and/or cook properly before eating.
- Take the typhoid vaccine to provide long-term protection.
- Use only clean sources of water whenever you clean and cook your food.

Typhoid fever can be detected using different identifying and confirmatory lab tests using blood, urine or stool (poo) samples.
