THREAD: A new AP-NORC poll shows that despite widespread job losses and business closures, many Americans have shored up their finances by saving more money and paying down debt during the pandemic. apne.ws/ZPl42Jj
The new poll shows that 45% of Americans say they’re setting aside more money than usual, and 26% are paying down debt faster than they were before the coronavirus pandemic. Image
The poll’s findings shed light on a persistent riddle of a global pandemic: Even as just 37% call the national economy good, 63% describe their personal financial situation as good. apne.ws/6606XYq
But the poll also exposes the pandemic’s unequal toll. Overall, 26% of Americans have been unable to pay a bill because of COVID-19, but that includes 47% of Black Americans, 39% of Hispanic Americans, and 48% of those experiencing a household job loss. Image

Why does The Associated Press call U.S. elections?

Unlike in other democracies, the Founding Fathers didn’t establish a government agency for counting the vote, and the states all do it a little differently, so the @AP counts the votes.

#Election2022

THREAD 👇
The Associated Press has been counting votes and declaring winners in elections since 1848.

How does @AP count the vote on election night?

It takes months of preparation, 4,000 vote gatherers, and dozens of experts declaring winners in thousands of races.

All the numbers are carefully checked numerous times for accuracy.

What happens if Republicans win back the House and Senate?

Here’s what is at stake as voters across the U.S. decide who they want to represent them in Congress.

THREAD 👇

#Election2022
If the GOP wins back the House, Democratic priorities like access to abortion, addressing climate change and stricter gun control would immediately be sidelined.

Most of Biden’s agenda would be effectively dead for the final two years of his term.

While the Senate could tilt either way, the majority party is still likely to have the slimmest of margins.

That means Biden could find a bit more common ground there, no matter who is in charge.

Minneapolis voters reject replacing its police department with a new public safety unit. The result comes more than a year after George Floyd’s death launched a movement to defund or abolish police across the country. apne.ws/Kn210ly
The debate brought national attention to the election, as well as a river of out-of-state money seeking to influence a contest that could shape changes in policing elsewhere, too. apne.ws/7bXATQL
The ballot proposal had roots in the abolish-the-police movement that erupted after Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer last year. The debate over racial justice in policing brought national attention to Tuesday’s vote. apne.ws/sPP649N
