He argued that a 2011 “Conference of the Gods” decision to focus on capital + traffic caused the co to lose its ability to innovate.

The Metaverse is an evolution of the internet that spans VR, AR, online, and physical worlds, creating a new layer of the economy with rich experiences, many of which were not previously possible.
@ballmatthew and @timsweeneyepic explain it best.

Tencent owns stakes in 4 of the companies in this graphic 👀

1. Not science fiction, inevitable even if final form unclear.
2. Games & game engines are important, but just one piece of the puzzle.
3. Owning Content and Platforms underpinning the Metaverse will be highly lucrative
Impossible to value - like predicting size of the ‘net in the 90s. You couldn’t have predicted multiple trillion $$ companies and many more multi-bn $$ ones.
Tencent is perfectly positioned.
We will interact with the Metaverse in many ways including VR, AR, Audio, and mobile internet. Tencent owns a leading Platform in each.
VR: @epicgames
AR: @snap
Audio: @spotify
Mobile Internet: @WeChatApp
Fortnite looks like the closest thing to the Metaverse today, but it really just shows off the power of Unreal Engine as the key platform. Games, movies, and buildings all rendered with Unreal.
More worlds built on Unreal, easier it is to stitch them together.
Snap is building Mirrorworld, the AR layer on top of the real world, by building for itself then opening up tools: Camera Kit, Bitmoji, Snap Kit, Local Lenses, etc…
I wrote a full piece about it here (I ❤️ $SNAP)

The Metaverse may look more like Her than Ready Player One - audio-based for the in-between moments when we can’t be fully immersed.
Spotify is making all the right moves to own audio, as I wrote about in Earshare:

WeChat is already like a 2D Metaverse - stores, chat, music, games, payments. It will be fascinating to see what kind of influence WeChat has on the Mataverse’s design.
@marc_it’s diagram with more Tencent investments overlaid shows their strong position in games, ecommerce, and premium social.
- $5.5bn in Q2 revenue
- Owns Riot Games (League of Legends), most Twitch-streamed esport
- Owns 40% of Epic (Fortnite)
- Owns 1.5% of Roblox (50% of under 16yo in US)
- So much more.
Games are the on-ramp to the Metaverse, and Tencent dominates.
Metaverse needs a functioning, participatory economy. Tencent owns the pieces.
- WeChat Minis let cos build stores, WeChat Pay bridges online/offline pymnts
- Paystack, Khatabook, Gojek, SeaMoney - SME payments
- Pinduoduo C2M & Social Comm
Tencent is missing remote collab & productivity (recently launched VooV to compete w Zoom)
Targets would help build both for and in Metaverse together:

This feels like the opportunity that most of us missed to buy $AAPL, $AMZN, $GOOG, & $MSFT in early 2000s.
Tencent is: undervalued portfolio of top internet assets + free call option on a new world.
