last night, 8 people being detained in brooke house detention centre attempted suicide. 3 of them have been taken to hospital, 5 were treated there. all of them are yemeni nationals who recently arrived via the channel+ are seeking asylum. all are on hunger strike...
to protest their imminent deportation (today or tomorrow) to spain or germany. there are 22 people currently on hunger strike.
all face deportation under 'dublin regulations' and face onward deportation to countries like iraq, yemen and sudan.
at least one person has received removal instructions to germany- where their application for asylum has already been rejected by the german high court.
there are 3 brothers who's application has been denied + who face deportation but who's dad has an outstanding asylum claim
"We are Yeminis+ were detained here in Brook House. Our country is going through a war. We left Yemen to escape persecution+ war+ to avoid death+ to come to a country that is safe, where we can live safely+ healthily without fear of persecution." - one of the hunger strikers.
those inside have complained of lack of access to healthcare and of abuse and taunts from the guards. yemeni campaigners outside have said: "The Yemeni community in Sheffield is appalled by the treatment of Yemeni refugees in the UK fleeing war and famine...
..This is an opportunity for politicians on all sides to demonstrate their commitment to our shared humanity and shared compassion for those most vulnerable in our Society."
those inside have previously spoken about the traumatic journey to the uk. they have spoken of being misled by smugglers, of being taken to spain instead of the UK. of the abuse they relieved in spain+ being left destitute and homeless before making the journey here.
on sunday one of those inside brooke house spoke over the phone to a demo outside the home office. he said "we just came via boat, we put our lives on the line...people here are dying. there is no healthcare. people are suffering. we are normal people, we just want a normal life"
brooke house is a notorious detention centre with a 2018 panorama investigation exposing widespread abuse of detainees by G4S guards.
UK weapons exports to saudi arabia were suspended last year by the high court after it found they were being used in yemen to commit human rights atrocities.
the UK government resumed arms sales to SA this year.
there is a petition to #canceltheflights by @sdetsup which you can sign here (pls share this far and wide).
huge demo for chris kaba, who was shot dead earlier in the week by metropolitan police in streatham, south london, now making its way down whitehall
chants of ‘black lives matter’ and ‘say his name! chris kaba’ as thousands reach parliament square and turn off towards westminster bridge (and ultimately new scotland yard - HQ of the met)
demo very slowly making its way past parliament, which is sitting, and entering its second day of tributes to the queen. placards here calling for the met to be abolished and justice for chris kaba.
the death of one woman has superseded reporting or political action on energy crisis that is going to effect millions, the killing of yet another black man by the met and the unbanning of fracking. whatever your views on the queen we simply do not have time for weeks more stasis.
im in no way sad about the queen dying, if you are then fine, you do you! but it is obscene that after a summer of gross inaction, we are heading for an autumn of silence as political establishment shuts down for 10 days and then is back for a couple before conference recess
there are 18 hours of parliamentary time dedicated to mourning the queen over the next two days vs what? 4 hours on the energy crisis yesterday. that is a crass abdication of political duty.
🧵: tomorrow the policing bill goes back to the commons. after almost a year of resistance to the bill on the streets and inside both the commons and the lords, this is the final stage before it becomes law. here's what to look out for and what's at stake...
back in january you may remember mammoth sitting in the lords in which govt suffered historic defeat to amendments it had attempted to sneak into the bill after it passed commons. those amendments (which inc. protest stop + search + more) were voted down + cant be reintroduced.
mps will decide on amendments lords made to the bill. where part 3 (protest) is concerned these are:
removing noise restrictions on protest
removing criminalisation of single person protest
amending offence of wilful obstruction of highway to only include strategic road network
.@ukhomeoffice replied to my request for comment 90 mins after the deadline i gave them (5 minutes after flight was scheduled to leave) with the below. let’s pick apart why that’s nonsense…🧵
1) we very specifically went to them stating we had evidence that some of those on the flight were victims of trafficking. just yesterday a VOT was removed from the flight after public pressure and last minute interventions from legal teams. these people are not “dangerous FNOs”
we know from previous flights that those they deem to be dangerous FNOs are often not. people have been deported for traffic offences. deporting FNOs is fundamentally wrong as it serves as double punishment + creates unfair, tiered and racialised system of ‘justice’
i'm a 30yo homosexual from the south east, i'd called 6 people babe before i'd had breakfast this morning
hard to believe such a facile, baseless and superficial attempt at understanding and engaging with oppression and liberation could come from... a policy advisor for the lib dems on immigration...
