huge demo for chris kaba, who was shot dead earlier in the week by metropolitan police in streatham, south london, now making its way down whitehall chants of ‘black lives matter’ and ‘say his name! chris kaba’ as thousands reach parliament square and turn off towards westminster bridge (and ultimately new scotland yard - HQ of the met)

whats the most mental queens death related thing you've seen or read so far? i think the met office declaring weather to be disrespectful is up there that pic of paddington walking the queen off into the light like some kind of angel of death is good too

the death of one woman has superseded reporting or political action on energy crisis that is going to effect millions, the killing of yet another black man by the met and the unbanning of fracking. whatever your views on the queen we simply do not have time for weeks more stasis. im in no way sad about the queen dying, if you are then fine, you do you! but it is obscene that after a summer of gross inaction, we are heading for an autumn of silence as political establishment shuts down for 10 days and then is back for a couple before conference recess

🧵: tomorrow the policing bill goes back to the commons. after almost a year of resistance to the bill on the streets and inside both the commons and the lords, this is the final stage before it becomes law. here's what to look out for and what's at stake... back in january you may remember mammoth sitting in the lords in which govt suffered historic defeat to amendments it had attempted to sneak into the bill after it passed commons. those amendments (which inc. protest stop + search + more) were voted down + cant be reintroduced.

.@ukhomeoffice replied to my request for comment 90 mins after the deadline i gave them (5 minutes after flight was scheduled to leave) with the below. let’s pick apart why that’s nonsense…🧵 1) we very specifically went to them stating we had evidence that some of those on the flight were victims of trafficking. just yesterday a VOT was removed from the flight after public pressure and last minute interventions from legal teams. these people are not “dangerous FNOs”

going to be back in court on tuesday for long awaited stansted 15 appeal. feeling pretty stressed+anxious tbh. its a particularly weird time for it to happen. if you don't know what s15 is, or want a reminder, heres a thread on the action, trial(s)+what'll be happening next week: caveat: i have to be *extremely* careful about what i say. there will be gaps in this story+ this thread because of that. they are intentional.

everything i say here, any opinions i express etc are my own+should be regarded+reported as such. i'm not speaking for the collective

horrifying bill back in commons tomorrow. covert human intelligence sources bill will grant powers to MI5, police+ others to authorise agents to commit criminal offences with no prohibition on murder, torture, sexual offences. insanely, labour is whipping to abstain. [thread] the bill comes to parly following the third direction case last year, which saw mi5s 'partially secret' policy of allowing agents and informations to break the law deemed lawful last year. the ruling is subject to an appeal. theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/d…

After releasing a mea culpa on their relationship with the police in July, Extinction Rebellion announced they'd parted company with controversial co-founder Roger Hallam. I investigated what he's up to now+ how much he can ever be separated from the group vice.com/en_uk/article/… for what it's worth - my take on it is such:

there are a lot of good people in XR doing a lot of important, necessary and urgent work in terms of both action on climate change and movement building.

there are also a lot of people who are actively working against that.

momentum not coming to play: “Keir Starmer’s speech was a missed opportunity to show substance. If Starmer wants to appeal to working class voters, his pitch should be based on solidarity with the working class and defending their interests, not just slogans and platitudes.” ““74% of people want test and trace taken away from private firms yet Starmer was silent on the catastrophic failure caused by the outsourcing of test and trace, including to companies with links to the Conservative Party, or of Labour's opposition to privatisation”

here we go then lads really does say a lot about us that they feel the need to spell out “as the virus spreads, there will be hospitalisations and sadly deaths” like we didn’t already do 6 months of this

such a weak comment on a report that says the home office has "no idea" what £400 million immigration enforcement budget achieves + also does not know if it's hostilie environment policies actually even have an impact on 'illegal' migration. this lab front bench are clowns smh sorry but this is really easy win stuff - the home office were forced to admit they have no evidence any of this is even working, or how many people are here "illegally" or what the impact is of anything they do wtf are labour doing?

shameful. my maths might be off here but i make around 30 tory abstentions.

there are 364 tory mps and assuming all 8 DUP mps voted with the govt as they planned to makes around 30 absent.

could mean amendments (inc. tory MP bob neils which comes tomorrow (i believe) could be squeakers

we've been building to this moment through successive conservative prime ministers. from cameron's vote for prisoners tantrum to may threatening to rip up the HRA every time someone exhaled, this has been coming for a while but the framing of it is just so disingenuous [thread] Image the human rights act 1998 was a piece of legislation brought in by the blair government to normalise and entrench rights we have enjoyed since september 3rd 1953, when the european convention on human rights came into effect.

sorry to get super personal on main but don't really have another outlet soooo... i'm super lucky that i've had a job//commissions throughout this whole time but i've literally worked myself into a breakdown over the last 6 months+ now not really sure how to navigate out of it.. after the trial and sentencing, i had a bit of time where i wasn't working as much - not out of choice, but more because i was just kind of working through the shell shock of the conviction and the prison near miss and couldn't really do much beyond just stare a lot

7 minutes in and i’m quite confident in saying ‘pocahontas 2: journey to a new world’ is not a good film that annoying little skunk is still running riot but grandmother willow is still a don. a lot of time for her energy (even tho she’s sending poca off to england to live what will be a grim life of spectacle and sadness before succumbing to flu or something)

that was fucking chaos +is not only the precursor to a 2nd lockdown (blamed entirely on young people+ coming to a town near you in the next couple of weeks) but also foreshadowing of the clusterfuck these incompetents are going to make of distributing a vaccine when it comes. they’ve had months to plan for a second wave + instead of focusing on putting in place a viable testing mechanism or a functioning track and trace system these idiots have been feeding us bullshit about being back to normal by christmas + spaffing off about how good commuting is
