The national press corps' email obsession wasn’t driven by prior national security commitments. That was obvious at the time, and confirmed by years of relative indifference to the national security implications of the many ways Trump imperils national security as president.
Even the Russia scandal, which the press corps wasn't indifferent to, didn’t generate attention primarily because Trump's conduct imperiled national security.
But Kushner’s clearance, the migration of national security matters to WhatsApp, Trump’s own unsecured phone, his opaque finances, the Trump administration’s OWN EMAIL PRACTICES—all non-stories at this point.
The issue is that when one party (but in this and most cases, we’re talking about Republicans) gets mad or pretends to be mad about something, unwritten journalism rules say that thing has entered the realm of controversy, and thus merits sustained coverage.
That standard is easily hacked by unscrupulous actors. But as long as it's the standard, it gives us some insight into why the MSM doesn’t care about serial Hatch Act violations, or last night’s televised abuse of the pardon power and immigration law to help Trump’s re-election.
Democrats eventually got appropriately freaked out about the Post Office and now it’s perhaps the most scrutinized institution in the federal government.
I, personally, am legitimately worried and angry about what happened last night, what it says about how far we’ve fallen and what lies ahead the next two months. But if Dems believe that “not taking the bait” is the savvy political move, then there will be no consequences for it.
Right. The problem isn’t a lack of public interest in the ethics and lawfulness of the president. There’s another missing ingredient.
Pelosi got a question about this today just before minute 12 here. Her full answer is a couple minutes long, but the key to the whole thing is in the part I’ll quote below. c-span.org/video/?475182-…
Pelosi: “The American people really—they know these people are unethical and illegal and doing things outside the law. What they want to know is what we’re going to be doing for them. And we’d rather have our focus be on how we’re going to protect their health care."
