When Kenya promulgated the new Constitution a decade ago, it beckoned infinite possibilities for many Kenyans, especially those long marginalized in the north. In terms of symbolic and practical value, the event was synonymous with Kenya's independence in 1963 #Katiba10YearsLater
For the people of Northern Kenya, who have experienced state brutality and wanted to secede before independence, the new Constitution carried a far deeper meaning. It represented new self-rule. #Katiba10YearsLater
In other words, for this region, 2010 was 1963. However, nothing much has changed since. As argued by @Dalle22 & @QulshTM , "For the average citizen, the only thing that has changed is that their marginalization now has a local flavor." #Katiba10YearsLater
Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir are among the countries that thrive in bribing their way into plundering the taxpayers' money. Just like the elites in 1963 promised to alleviate poverty and work on strengthening the economy, elites in these counties failed #Katiba10YearsLater
When the Senate came up with astonishing plans that would see most of these counties lose money, leaders including those elected politicians came out, protesting. #Katiba10YearsLater
While the enthusiasm is admirable, why are these voices mute when these leaders plunder these counties' resources? Why are they not concerned about the visible corruption going on? #Katiba10YearsLater
My point, keep calling for fair allocation from Nairobi but with the same breath, demand accountability from those who manage these resources. Yes, marginalization was mainstream before 2010. However, for the last 10 years, we marginalized ourselves. #Katiba10YearsLater
