Did you know that Pixar's UP used 20,622 balloons for the house lift-off sequence

I am going to focus on that number

But first before we do

I am going to talk about "intensity and clarity"

dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ar…
So Pixar

There are lots of great movies there

They are entertaining

And also educational

medium.com/@daniel.whitlo…
A great look into how Pixar encourage a work place community and culture that has created so many great works

hbr.org/2008/09/how-pi…
Now sadly

That's the Pixar focus over

I will come back to UP and the number of balloons later

But first I want to talk about something else

"you will experience things with an intensity and clarity, believe me, that is seldom repeated in your lives"
That was the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson talking to school children on the return to English schools

Just as a reminder

Here's his school report

thelondoneconomic.com/news/letter-to…
Here's his technology tutor
Oh also - here are the school librarian's showing that in an age where zoom has opened up the world of home bookshelves

The librarian's showed the power of books

tes.com/news/boris-joh…
I wrote a small thread on Michael Gove and his bookshelves and what I learnt from him and Sarah

It's a long thread (really it is) - I would recommend coming back to it later

A reminder here is Boris on his "clarity"

"Bianca is weeping, and I don't think she's faking"

May you always be as clear & intense as Boris Johnson

26/7/2019

“He was such a mess. He was quite dishevelled and his trousers were twisted and creased. He looked like he had slept in his clothes.”

theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
Sadly the rest of the thread is not on Pixar movies

Perhaps I should do a thread on them

Instead my thread is on the first element of my introduction

The first duty of government

With regards: Coronavirus
"The first duty of the government is to keep citizens safe and the country secure. The Home Office has been at the front line of this endeavour since 1782. "

gov.uk/government/org….
I have written this thread with a focus on the United Kingdom

Because I live in it

But the underlying question can be applied to any country
Now I should make it clear at the start

I am not a voter who voted for the current British Government in the form of Boris Johnson and his party

But
I want to see that Government succeed

I want to see that Government live up to its promise on levelling up, the ramping up of the country, the appraoch of the sunlit uplands of brexit
I may disagree with its methods in doing so

I may disagree with the efficacy of its methods in doing so
But ultimately I want my country to improve

I want my children to grow up in a better world
after all as a British politician said in an earlier age we need to "Make Britain Great Again"

although she didn't print it on hats
After all

After a decade of Conservative's being in power

There is much still to be done

So so much

As Liz Truss "explains" eloquently here (joking)

Anyway enough about the legacy of a decade of power

No

let's just talk about one of the favoured right wing tropes of late

the whole "Defund the Police"

In the midst of a global deadly pandemic

I want those who govern me to *succeed* even more

I want them to be competent

I want them to lead

I want them to reassure

I want them to be trustable

I want them to be open
Looking back to earlier pandemics

Here is

A lesson on epidemics

Lessons from 1918

history.com/news/1918-span…
More lessons from 1918

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK22148/
So amidst the ongoing pandemic

My simple question

What does "success" look like when dealing with coronavirus?

A reminder

Boris Johnson has claimed it

An apparent success

A great success

A massive success
A reminder 31/1/2020

Boris Johnson forecasts Britain will make a "stunning success" of Brexit

A reminder: The reality of 4 plus years of the shitshow con of cheats, liars and racists

Warning: a long thread/sub-thread

Here's a reminder of a cheating lying racist sexist narcissistic nepotistic incompetent bullying charlatan that inhabits the @WhiteHouse

I am not going to chronicle Trump's timeline on coronavirus - there are american's who have done that already

I am not going to focus on him

As everyone knows what he is

Particularly those who sell him

And I am not going to focus on Boris Johnson (much)

He is an amoral cheating lying racist incompetent charlatan

Those that know it best

Those who enabled his ascent and his continuance are desperate in how they defend and deflect from him

Amber Rudd

'You can't trust him to take you home at the end of an evening'

Sadly he was and still is herd leader for a pandemic
Here's George and Ruth in agreement

Ruth: the story you've just told us and I am paraphrasing but it came across as somebody who likes him who has known him a long time but who fundamentally agrees with the criticism he doesn't believe in anything

Back to our main topic

What is the definition of "success" ?

Here is a thread on Stalin and an infamous quote

How will you remember coronavirus?

It's a fascinating question

The quote from this

"History can essentially be divided into two: that which we like to remember, and that we seek actively to forget."

politico.eu/article/corona…
The key quote from the above

"Perhaps the most fitting monument to the legacy and scale of our losses to the coronavirus might be to ensure that this time — we remember."
What does success look like?

What is the difference between the superlative adjectives employed by Boris Johnson and his cult to sell it?

Why can you not be honest about covid?

What does your lack of self respect say about yourself or contempt for those you sell it to?
So now we go back in time

No not back to when Boris Johnson was having his holiday in Mustique
No not to when he was busy enjoying the grace and favour of Chequers whilst England flooded
Instead we go back to the 5th March 2020

The first coronavirus fatality in the UK

Sadly there must always be a first

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-517596…
And on 5th March 2020

"It comes as the number of UK people diagnosed with the virus reached 116, a rise of more than 30 in 24 hours."
And then you go to this

"At least five other people had died from the coronavirus in the UK by the time the government reported the first death from the outbreak, new data has revealed."

theguardian.com/world/2020/apr…
"The figures show that the lethal impact of the outbreak had already been recorded when Boris Johnson joked about shaking hands with hospital staff in the first Downing Street coronavirus briefing on 3 March, when no deaths had been officially announced."
Yes think back to the 3rd March briefing where Boris Johnson joked about shaking hands with covid patients

He lied of course - he didn't shake hands with covid patients

He just thought it a funny rambling joke
Where are we now at the end of August

Oh yes - hands, face, space
Just like oh yes "Operation Last Gasp"

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8…
If you want to see how that ventilator programme went

Well - it was reported on by many

Now I am not going to through the daily updates

If you want to remind yourself of the daily briefings

Then these are here

It's a good resource with transcripts

rev.com/blog/transcrip…
There is also this

coronavirus.data.gov.uk
Now you go back to 23rd Jan 2020

"The public can be assured that the whole of the UK is always well-prepared for these types of outbreaks and will remain vigilant and keep our response under constant review in the light of emerging scientific evidence."

parliament.uk/business/news/…
Also on 23/1/2020

The Shadow Minister for Public Health told MPs:

"There is a chance that a global pandemic can be avoided if governments across the world take the right measures in a timely fashion."
So the question is what is success?

What death toll is acceptable?

foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/02/cou…
Of course in the UK

We were lucky Boris Johnson was on the ball

"I’ve been comparing notes & talking to leaders around the world, & I can tell you that 🇬🇧 is leading a growing global campaign amongst friends & allies"
So let's go over some of the "massive success" of the 2020 response of Her Majesty's Government

Now I will be kind to Boris Johnson

Some of these occured prior to his leadership of the Conservative Party

He personally is not responsible for them
After all Boris Johnson is an eager learner

He is hands on

As demonstrated by his passion for arts advisers historically

And more recently his technology tutor

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7…
It's a good thing Carrie and Boris resolved this

“You just don’t care for anything because you’re spoilt. You have no care for money or anything.”

inews.co.uk/news/uk/boris-…
After all given Tory cuts to domestic abuse services ....

I do wonder prior to moving into No10 whether Carrie was as cannie as Melania

theguardian.com/us-news/2020/j…
Anyway sorry back to coronavirus

So

I before I return to the number of balloons in UP

I am going to give just a few items around the "massive success" of coronavirus that Boris Johnson our blessed herd leader has overseen

These aren't arranged in any particular timeline order
We go back a few years

To 2016

When a simulation was held to test the UK's pandemic preparedness

telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/2…
Now not only did the UK NOT implement those lessons

But the report was suppressed

independent.co.uk/voices/coronav…
29th April 2020

Commons PAC Committee:

Gove said that he read the report from Exercise Cygnus last week - although he said he had read recommendations prompted by the report earlier.
Good to see he finally got around to reading it

No hurry or anything
"Analysis of official financial data suggests £325m was wiped off the value of the Department of Health and Social Care emergency stockpile, reducing it from £831m in 2013 under the Conservative-led coalition government to £506m by March last year."

theguardian.com/world/2020/apr…
Here's also the Telegraph reporting this

telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/1…
You fiddle figures to hit your 100,000 tests a day target

hsj.co.uk/quality-and-pe…
Not only do you do this

You are deliberate in how you do this to perfectly coincide with the date of your "promise"

independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
You don't attend COBRA

independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
You lie about shaking hands with covid patients

(Hint: The hospital didn't have any - so it's a rather brazen lie)

uk.news.yahoo.com/coronavirus-bo…
Abolish pandemic teams

telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/…
The lies on the EU ventilator scheme

businessinsider.com/coronavirus-eu…
Lie about protective rings

independent.co.uk/voices/coronav…
Use your position to procure a covid test for your family improperly

independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
You have a PPE crisis

sor.org/news/society-t…
So what better to do

Than to attack NHS staff for misusing it

theguardian.com/society/2020/a…
Or attack care home staff

telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/07/0…
Or suppress a report into covid and its affect on BAME people

theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
Imagine suppressing that - why its almost like BAME lives don't matter

channel4.com/news/channel-4…
Again - not only is the suppression unashamed

But to tamper with it

Well....

fr24news.com/a/2020/06/bma-…
Not to worry here is Matt Hancock to basic questions from Dr Rosena Allin-Khan telling her to watch her "tone"

theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
Gag journalists at the daily briefings by use of mute

Imagine doing that

Imagine standing by and permitting that

Again unashamed

opendemocracy.net/en/opendemocra…
Even when caught

It is still unashamed

pressgazette.co.uk/no-questions-f…
If you can gag journalists

Then of course

Gagging scientists is easy

theguardian.com/politics/2020/…
But hey - here's Boris again with a joke

islingtongazette.co.uk/news/politics/…
here's a "world beating" test & trace system

theguardian.com/world/2020/aug…
Oh yes remember when Matt Hancock lied about when lockdown started

Well - you can also lie about when test & trace started

it's not like this isn't something that wasn't warned of

dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8…
Here's the shambles of PPE purchasing

theguardian.com/world/2020/may…
A reminder between January and May

£833,000 was spent on polling companies

thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/n…
Not only the £833,000 but *HOW* it was chosen to be spent

One contract criticised in recent weeks was with a research company with links to Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings, and was agreed without an open tender for the work.

theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/pu…
The Nightingale hospitals a great achievement at getting existing conference centre buildings fitted up to perform hospital ward provision

But would they have been usable to cope had the peak been exceeded?

independent.co.uk/news/health/co…
Health care staff that we clapped for

fullfact.org/health/we-dont…
Were the criteria for ending the lock down met?

"the easing of restrictions comes down to political judgement."

bbc.co.uk/news/health-52…
Apparently according to Stanley Johnson the nation only took covid seriously when our beloved herd leader was infected with covid

Hint: That is an insult to every person who died of the disease prior to Boris Johnson being infected.

indy100.com/article/boris-…
A reminder on Stanley

dailymail.co.uk/video/news/vid…
A reminder his son's school report

thelondoneconomic.com/news/letter-to…
And before we return to numbers

Here is a thread on numbers

The number of Tory MPs who responded to the Cummings call to defend his trip to County Durham and his eye-sight test to Barnaby Castle

It's amazing how low the cult will go to defend Cummings

Cummings' contempt for them is only surpassed

By their contempt for themselves as MPs
Anyway enough about all the stories that help make up what the "massive success" of coronavirus herd leader Boris Johnson has had

But anyway that is a backdrop to choices

I want to focus on numbers

And on "success"
Back to the UK government dashboard

coronavirus.data.gov.uk/?_ga=2.2041442…
So just to focus on one figure

41,465 dead (as of 27th August 2020)

Remember it's a "massive success"
So you know how earlier on in the thread I listed when the first UK death record for covid was

Well there was an update to that today

Not the first death

But the first positive test

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…
"Patient 1 in this study is, to the best of our knowledge, the earliest described community-acquired case of SARS-CoV-2 in the UK, admitted to hospital care on the 21st of February 2020, and was also the first UK COVID-19 death, preceding the earliest known death by 2 days."
To compare with America

What is fascinating is Dr Fauci who confirmed community transmission was known about in America in mid January

It puts the first US covid death at 6th February

bbc.co.uk/news/amp/world…
So I am going to do a little mathematical game now

You can do this with American figures also

I am going to focus on UK figures first

So lets be kind to Matt Hancock

Let's take the total death figure from the first death 28th February

news.sky.com/story/coronavi…
Oh and just a reminder

There were 22 consecutive days where the daily death toll exceeded 1,000

theguardian.com/world/2020/jun…
But let's not focus on that number

You have two approaches now

(see my earlier thread on Stalin)

You choose to take the number on a daily basis

Or/and

You choose to take the number on a total basis
Now if you have lost a friend or family to coronavirus

Or you have lost a friend or family to death during this year and coronavirus has drastically affected what would be "normal" end of life treatment, conditions or indeed funerals/memorials

You have my deepest condolences
The question of forgiveness is a fascinating one

"I can forgive them for what has happened. I will be unable to forgive them if it happens a second time"

I am not interested in forgiveness

I am interested in accountability of my elected represenatives

And in that accountability how those elected represenatives deal with criticism of their covid response

After all - as I started this thread with

That FIRST duty of Government
And if you have had a "massive success" of something

I want to know

What metrics made it "massive"

What in your response to the something made it so "massive" a success

What other categories of measurements are available beneath or even above the "massive success" level
So going on today's date of the 27th August

That is 181 days

Take the 41,465 dead

To give a daily average of 229 deaths per day

Now remember our starter to this thread

20,622 balloons

We have as a nation lost 2 UP houses of balloons
Oh to compare that with UK and the first death

Here is America

183,677 total dead

A daily average from 6th February to 27th August (204 days) gives 900 deaths per day

I would send you thoughts and prayers but I am not sure they work with Trump
Now I want to try and think of other ways you can process this

YOu could compare it on a daily or total amount to population of towns

thegeographist.com/uk-cities-popu…
You could compare it to the size of cemeteries either in a general sense

Here's some of the oldest

oldest.org/culture/cemete….
Here's Omaha Beach (9,387 burials)

battlefieldsww2.50megs.com/normandy_ameri….
You can do it by other organisations that has lost people doing their duty

"There are 133 stars[2] carved into the white Alabama marble wall,[3] each one representing an employee who died in the line of service."

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIA_Memor…
There is also similar here

The central inscription reads:

RECOGNISING SERVICE AT HOME AND ABROAD PROTECTING THE UNITED KINGDOM SINCE 1909

westminster-abbey.org/abbey-commemor…
Also similar here for Putin's best asset Donald

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wall_of_G…
I find personally that to try and visualise it with disasters

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_d…
The closest one in the UK

226 dead

Quintinshill rail crash1915 (22 May)

Three-train collision in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Britain's worst railway accident.[42]
You can also pick out memorable ones based on your local area or age

e.g.

1988 167 dead Piper Alpha
1966 143 dead Aberfan mining disaster
1989 96 dead Hillsborough
1996 18 dead Dunblane school shooting
For America

You can do this comparison as well on a average daily basis or a total

You can do wars

You can choose 9/11

You can choose transport disasters

You can choose school shootings
At the heart a simple question

What do you take to be "success" in response to coronavirus
Now I accept that you may well not change your view on the party you support in a political sense as a result of how they have handled coronavirus

And I do not ask that you do

Just tell me honestly

If your country's leader tells you this is a "success"
Ask them one simple question:

What would failure look like?

Hence why so many leaders are desperate to embed a historical narrative ahead of inquiries to muddy the waters, flood the zone to obfuscate their choices & their responsibilities

You choose whether you allow their contempt for duty, decency and honesty is something you permit
It is absolutely crucial to retain credibility. Giving false reassurance is the worst thing one can do.If I may speculate, let me suggest that almost as bad as outright lying is holding information so close people think officials know more than they say.
