yep. i wrote a column about this recently. even if you’re a “we’re a republic not a democracy” chud, you have to understand that two consecutive “misfires” resulting in a two-term minoritarian presidency is something that has never happened and will produce a legitimacy crisis.
from roughly 1828 onwards the presumption has been that the person who wins the most votes becomes president, and on the two occasions before 2016 that didn’t happen, it was a massive controversy that almost ripped the country apart.
the idea that the *intent* of the EC was to produce these outcomes is an outright falsehood. if two consecutive misfires had happened at any point in the 19th or 20th century, it would have produced a constitutional crisis almost certainly culminating in abolition of the EC.
