Tonight’s the finale of the Republican National Convention. #RNC2020 We’ve been watching the convention closely and fact-checking speeches from prominent speakers. Here’s a little recap:
Last week, we fact-checked the DNC. As an independent and nonpartisan fact-checker, we're committed to fact-checking both parties. Here’s our fact-checking of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama and others: bit.ly/34m1SMn
On the first night of the RNC, Republicans opened their convention with speeches touting President Trump’s accomplishments interspersed with dark ruminations about what a Joe Biden presidency would look like. We fact-checked them:
President Trump addressed delegates to the 2020 RNC for more than an hour on Monday. The president made several claims that were either wrong, misleading, premature or needed clarification. bit.ly/3jbXpA5
Speakers on the first night of the RNC criticized Joe Biden on the issue of taxes. Nikki Haley said Biden and Harris "want massive tax hikes on working families." False. No direct taxes would be imposed on any household making less than $400,000 per year. bit.ly/3ldrMrD
The second night of the Republican convention was notable for breaking longstanding traditions, and possibly laws, against mixing politics and government. bit.ly/3gspSQj
Pam Bondi's speech from night 2 of RNC has roots in the January impeachment trial where she defended President Trump. We fact-checked her on Hunter Biden and Ukraine: bit.ly/3gylWNY
Rand Paul’s claim is Mostly True. Biden as a senator voted for resolutions that supported interventions in Iraq and Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro). As VP, he followed the policies of the Obama admin., which included interventions in Syria and Libya. bit.ly/31r547s
Speakers the second night also included first lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, economic adviser Larry Kudlow and others. Here’s our rundown: bit.ly/3lfdved
We also fact-checked remarks from Trump’s adult children during the Republican National Convention: Don Jr. on the COVID relief bill, Tiffany on health care and Eric on immigration.
Speakers at #RNC2020 have hailed Trump for getting the U.S. out of “endless wars.” But experts said those conflicts haven’t ended, peace in the Middle East hasn’t been achieved, and the U.S. presence in the region hasn’t significantly slimmed under Trump. bit.ly/31ueM9b
Then it was on to night three of the RNC, which included speakers Vice President Mike Pence and Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany. bit.ly/3jonLix
Pence said that, amid the COVID-19 pandemic, President Trump forged a “seamless” partnership with governors. He spoke to governors, but he also often bashed them. Mostly False: bit.ly/34DLt6g

Here are the claims PolitiFact fact-checked live during last night's presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. 🧵
We don’t use the word “lie” lightly at PolitiFact. Our Lie of the Year looks back at the most significant falsehood that tried to undermine truth in 2023.
The 2023 Lie of the Year goes to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s campaign of conspiracy theories. (1/9)
Pundits and politicos have debated if Kennedy's presidential campaign will factor into the outcome of the 2024 election.
But what's clear is that Kennedy’s political following is built on a movement that seeks to legitimize conspiracy theories. (2/9) bit.ly/3tymIqH
As an independent candidate, Kennedy has made repeated false and debunked claims about vaccines and COVID-19. He aired conspiracy theories about the assassinations of his father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy. (3/9) politifact.com/factchecks/202…
The US achieved energy independence under Trump, only to be reversed by Biden? We rated a similar claim Mostly False this year. @PolitiFactWisc rated a similar claim Mostly False this year. politifact.com/factchecks/202…
THREAD: We have been tracking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ policy promises from his campaign in 2018. Here’s where his promises stand on the environment, teacher salaries, health care costs, and more: politifact.com/florida/promis…
When he ran for governor, Ron DeSantis pledged to protect and enhance Florida’s air quality. Although he didn't institute clean air policies immediately, metrics suggest air quality has improved. We rated this promise a Compromise. bit.ly/3FwWhpa
DeSantis said he’d advocate to broaden access to mental health and substance abuse treatment in Florida. He put money behind these initiatives and we rated this promise Kept. bit.ly/3zv4EO7
Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump’s own advisers added to the evidence that the election wasn’t stolen, including Attorney General Bill Barr who told Trump his statements were “bull----.” politifact.com/article/2022/j…
Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump said even before the election that rigging would be the only way Dems would win. Pants on Fire! politifact.com/factchecks/202…
A conspiracy to rig an election would require thousands of people conspiring across multiple jurisdictions to commit felonies. There’s no evidence it happened. politifact.com/factchecks/202…
New: For decades, the word “grooming” has been associated with child sexual abuse.
Now, it has become used to imply members of the LGBTQ community deliberately prey on children by discussing sexual orientation and gender identity. politifact.com/article/2022/m…
Exposure to these topics “does not change the way people develop,” said the University of Minnesota’s Jenifer McGuire, who studies family relationships and gender identity and the health of transgender youth.
“It changes how they feel about how they develop,” McGuire said. “Accepting parents don’t change whether or not their kid is trans — they change whether or not their kid hates themselves and gets kicked out of the house for being trans. The kid’s transness is there regardless.”
