Obviously speculating about election outcomes without much evidence is our main job as journalists, but if you are anti-looting — which I for am — it’s worth spending at least some time asking whether, factually speaking, re-electing Trump is likely to lead to less of it.
My view is the answer is no:

— He believes looting helps him, so the incentives are bad.

— His re-election would block electoral paths to reform and encourage non-electoralism of all kinds.

— His open embrace of lawlessness undermines the normative force of legality.
Of course if you think abortion should be illegal or corporate taxes lower or are otherwise aligned with Trump’s major ideas that’s fine.

But if you think those ideas are bad but are bothered by the surge in murder and urban disorder under Trump, don’t vote for more Trump!
