I've been overwhelmed by the kind words I’ve gotten in the last 48 hours over this piece by @LedererLedes on my work with @EquitableGrowth and beyond.

A big reason I’ve been fortunate enough to have this career?

Unions.

I kick off my book Unbound with one of the slogans of the labor movement: For the Many, Not The Few. I was able to get the good education that enabled me to write this because my father was a member of @IAM751 @MachinistsUnion, who fought like hell for their members. 2/10
In the 2000s, I was honored to serve as president of @NonprofitUnion, where we organized think-tank workers. That local now represents @EGLaborUnion. We recognized the union by card check, so staff would not be subjected to Trump’s anti-worker NLRB.

Much of the latest economic research shows that the decline of unions is a major factor driving the rise in inequality.

As work by @EquitableGrowth grantees and staff like @lipstickecon @awh @snaidunl @arindube @coreyhusak and more show, unions are essential for checking corporate power and building workplace democracy.

It’s not just that. As @JakeRosenfeld1 @toddntucker @V_Williamson @thwillow @DavidMadland and others have shown, unions improve the overall quality of democracy for all of us.

Despite all these benefits, there are now fewer people in unions that when FDR first gave them significant legal protections in the 1930s (!)

We do not have to passively accept this decline. Earlier this year, the House passed the PRO Act, which would restore and build on New Deal era labor protections, including by pre-empting so-called “right-to-work” laws that hurt unions.

And @sharblock @WorkerPowerLaw @BrishenRogers @KateAndrias and others have argued, there are a range of ways to upgrade labor law so that it fits the way our economy works today.

As we ensure that all workers have the right to join a union, let’s also make sure that they’re doing jobs that will be good for the planet and reduce our carbon footprint.
