I continue to feel that showing up armed to Portland protests, particularly open-carrying, is a tremendously bad idea.

More jumpy armed people standing around in the dark and being exposed to random explosions will not make anyone safer.
It is possible that last night's shooting was an act of legitimate legal self defense (although the shooter committed a crime by fleeing). But the video makes it clear that this was very different from a shooting at a protest. It occured away from the main mass of people.
My nightmare remains a situation where one or more people draw and fire at each other during a crowded and chaotic riot, with flash bangs and gas in the air. Numerous accidental casualties would be all but guaranteed.
