Our new paper: No Independent or Combined Effects of #VitaminD and #CLA on #Muscle Protein Synthesis💪 in Older Adults🧓:a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial is now online @nutritionorg #nutritwitter
academic.oup.com/ajcn/article-l…
We supplemented 60-85 y old adults with either :1) 2000 IU vitamin D-3 (Vit D)/day; 2) 4000 mg CLA/day; 3) both Vit D (2000 IU/d) and CLA (4000 mg/day); or 4) placebo for 8 weeks and studied the muscle anabolic response before and after.
As expected #VitaminD concentrations increased in the Vit D and Vit D + CLA Groups, while the contribution of linoleic acid to total plasma triglyceride fatty acid content increased in the CLA and Vit D + CLA Groups Image
Despite higher #VitaminD concentrations we found no differences in the anabolic response between any of the groups. Vitamin D and/or CLA supplementation, at the doses provided in our study, does not have muscle anabolic effects in sedentary older adults. Image

"Maternal milk DHA content predicts performance on children's math scores in a sample of 28 nations"

Many of the same countries are represented in a global survey of omega-3s in which adults have ⬆️blood EPA+DHA levels (>8%)

Typically, intakes in those countries >500 mg/d

Please note this is associative data, but interesting nonetheless!

The authors also provide a worthwhile discussion on whether we have the capacity to "feed the world" >500 mg of DHA + EPA per day. The short answer is that if we use fish alone then the answer is likely no.

Algae oil is of potential interest:

Excited to see our metabolomics analysis of beef and a plant-based alternative is now published.

nature.com/articles/s4159…

Despite comparable Nutrition Facts panels, we found that important differences exist.

A thread summarizing its main findings 👇 1/
2/ The plant-based meat alternative and beef studied in this work had largely comparable Nutrition Facts panels.

Being the curious scientists we are, after eating some ourselves, we were interested in taking a peek behind the curtain to determine differences/similarities.
3/ To study expanded nutrition profiles of beef (grass-fed) and the plant-based meat alternative, we used a technique called metabolomics.

Metabolomics allows researchers to measure and compare large numbers of metabolites present in biological samples.

If you consider it unethical to consume animals and choose to consume only plant foods as an adult, IMO that choice should be respected.

Whether this means populations across the board should drift from the default (omnivory) is where it becomes a nuanced discussion IMO 1/6
Intra-individual differences can preclude many to thrive on plant-foods alone. Despite heterogeneity in diets, populations worldwide show a genetic architecture adapted to include varying degrees of animal + plant foods, without exclusion of either. 2/6

Benefits regarding T2D, heart disease etc. are achieved because of high fruit/vegetable intake. When omnivores consume similar amounts, risk is cut similarly. Agree West pop would benefit from higher fruit/vegetable intake. 3/6

@ScepticalDoctor I don't think is that black and white, and the answer to that is very nuanced. there are benefits to eating both animal and plant foods. For starters, several populations based studies in healthy individuals or that extensively adjust for lifestyle factors 1/
find similar long-term health outcomes irrespective of whether diets were plant-based or omnivorous if diet quality=⬆️ 2/

Then there is the synergy/complementary nature of plant + animal foods. Plants are often higher in folate, thiamin, magnesium potassium, and Vitamin C+E and provides phytochemicals that can also offer protection against harmful compounds in animal foods. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/15…

Yes and some methodology is more robust than others. I have not shifted my position, the reason I asked you is because I was curious about the peer-reviewed evidence you would provide to build you case. I'll go ahead and build mine. 1/
You provided a screenshot of the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Scoring (PDCAAS) system, but there are some nuances to highlight. 2/
It is well-known that PDCAAS truncates the scores of dairy proteins to 1.00, and should really be closer to 1.10 or 1.20. Another nuance of PDCAAS is that it overestimates the digestibility of low-quality proteins. 3/ pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28382889/ ImageImage

Incorporating Diversity Into Animal Production Systems Can Increase Their Performance and Strengthen Their Resilience. While the farmers we work with always tell me this, it is good to see more actual research come out on this topic: doi.org/10.3389/fsufs.…
Example: grazing cattle and sheep together improves pasture health, animal performance and has broader ecosystem services like providing a sustainable habitat for insects. Cattle and sheep exploit different plants/grasses, and thus strengthen the ecosystem in synergistic ways.
Integrating livestock and crop-farming has benefits as well: grazing cover crops in rotation with cash crops (corn and soy) improves soil fertility and weed control, provides animal feed, and reduces the need for pesticides and synthetic fertilizer.
