9 #marketing tips for writing great push notifications after 9 months of sending them (thread) (1/10)
1. Be direct. Tell users the value of opening a push. When I get too cute and beat around the bush, people don't know what they're getting themselves into and don't tap.

Good: Are you stuck at your current weight? It's okay! Here's what to do.

Bad: Say No To The Plateau! (2/10)
2. Switch it up!

For weekly promotions, I can get stuck in a rut and copy & paste. For routine messages, get creative/fun. Open rates will shoot up!

Good: Don't tell your niece or she'll start singing... cause there's a sale on FROZEN (food)!

Bad: Get X% Off This Week! (3/10)
3. Personalize.

This may sound simple, but go beyond the user's name. Ask your dev team to create custom datapoints for you, and reference them to show your customer you know them.

Good: Only [X] more points until your next reward!

Bad: We think you'll like this, Kyle. (4/10)
4. Don't mess this one up!

See what I did there? User's (and marketers) desperately want to avoid making mistakes. It's a harsh reality, but our best pushes hint at the potential of screwing up.

Good: Avoid these 6 beginner mistakes

Bad: 6 Helpful Tips for Beginners (5/10)
5. Don't schedule, trigger!

Whenever possible, send messages that are triggered by a user's actions, NOT something sent on your watch.

[User views plunger]

Good: You know you want that plunger, Kyle. Lucky for you, it's now 20% off.

Bad: Bath Robes on Sale This Week!

6. Be Useful.

We get so caught up in creating new content, we forget the basics. Address common pain points with your product often.

Good: Can't get our microwave to start? Try pressing start!

Bad: Here's what would happen if you use our microwave in Space! (7/10)
7. Give them a taste.

Too many people withhold info in hopes of a click. Instead, give users a taste and entice them to click for more useful info.

Good: #4: Coffee can make you go fast for hours. Find out the other benefits!

Bad: Find out the 10 benefits of coffee.

8. Challenge user's fandom.

This one is silly but it actually works. It's probably easiest to just illustrate it.

Good: Calling all cookie lovers! Only true cookie fans have made all these recipes.

Bad: 11 Yummy Cookie Recipes (9/10)
9. Use CTAs that make sense.

Use meaningful CTAs. Try "Start Challenge" or "View Product" instead of "Open App". These have higher CTR's and tell a user what to expect when they tap.

Shoutout to @Braze which I use to test these theories and send messages using triggers and their Intelligent Timing feature, which sends messages when users are most likely to engage, not just at a time that I set.

Also @tobydoyhowell & @GoodMarketingHQ for the threadspiration.
