I've done a little more research since my last tweet raising q's about this, so here is a short thread...
On July 27, after a handful of lawmakers and Capitol staff got COVID-19, the Assembly passed a rule allowing members to vote by proxy during the coronavirus pandemic
"Pregnant people might be at an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19," according to the CDC cdc.gov/coronavirus/20… , and babies "appear to be at higher risk," says the Mayo Clinic:
Assembly member Buffy Wicks had a baby in late July.
Last week, a CHP officer and a lawmaker tested positive for COVID after both spending time in the Capitol
Assembly member Wicks asked Assembly leaders for permission to vote by proxy. She was denied, her spokesperson told me, "on the grounds that maternity leave is not eligible for proxy voting."
So today, a nursing mom and a 1 month old baby are working in a Capitol where there have been recent COVID cases... because the Assembly won't allow her any other way to vote.
ICYMI because you were doing something normal at 11:30 PM instead of watching the legislature on livestream: this moment was quite the cherry on top of this nursing-mother-can't-work-from-home-during-a-pandemic thread
