Repost: #MauritiusOilDisaster 🇲🇺🇯🇵 Japan's #NTV reports that 🇲🇺GoM has ASKED 🇯🇵GoJ to ASSIST with 1.2 billion MUR for "漁業支援費" (fisheries assistance cost). Final compensation amount for #Wakashio owner #Nagashiki is still to be determined.
This "fisheries assistance cost" will be allocated for the purchase of 100 near-sea fishing boats from 🇯🇵Japan and 🇱🇰Sri Lanka. The economic & ecological damage is still being assessed for full compensation, local media @lemauricien_com reported. lemauricien.com/actualites/soc…
On this report, Japanese media @nikkei@asahi@tbs_news@livedoornews and @YahooNewsTopics reported as if the 🇲🇺GoM DEMANDED 🇯🇵GoJ to PAY instead of requesting for assistance. This angered Japanese people because they think only ship owner should be required to compensate.
While it is understood that under maritime law only the ship owner is required to compensate for damages up to a certain reasonable amount, the IAPH @kokusaikouwan acknowledged there is a moral obligation for the ship charterer #MitsuiOSK and 🇯🇵 #GoJ
Prof. Sato, Seikei Univ: "Moral responsibility is political resp. and not international legal resp. However, political resp. is not in any way 'lighter' than intnl. legal resp. Japan at least needs to fulfill its political (moral) resp."
Therefore, 🇯🇵 #GoJ has the moral obligation to assist 🇲🇺Mauritius to recover from the damage in any way they can, aside from the monetary compensation that will be requested to ship owner #Nagashiki . #MitsuiOSK or #MOL is willing to do the same.
