My understanding of the poli-sci consensus is that voters care about whatever the press and political leaders signal they should care about it. So when we give the "lol nobody cares" treatment to a violation of federal law we're not describing reality, we're creating it.
The press went nuts over murder hornets for a month, and for a month everyone was obsessed with murder hornets, if you're looking for a recent real-world case study of this dynamic.
More on this because it's still bugging me: in every single swing state I checked, searched interest for "Hatch Act" spiked above the Kim K Threshold of Widespread Interest in the past couple days. People outside the beltway are interested and they care about this.

NEW: @jacobbogage got USPS data showing at least 671 USPS mail sorting machines have been removed across the country since June. Represents a reduction in national mail sorting capacity of 21.4 million pieces of mail per hour. washingtonpost.com/local/md-polit… Image

So much of the political response to the virus has boiled down to "I want this thing [schools, football, a functioning economy, etc] but I am unwilling to do the work necessary to have the thing."
This is not rocket science. "Epidemiologic evidence suggests that death rates can be lowered by 90% within 9 to 11 weeks after stringent control measures begin." Shut it down, support people for the duration, then get back to work.

We could have our lives back by Thanksgiving! But unless I'm mistaken, *nobody* in a leadership position in Congress or the White House is advocating for this type of hardcore approach. They've spent all summer bickering over which deck chairs to rearrange.
