This is discovery a milestone in modern astronomy and a personal milestone after six years of intensive research of hunting these elusive black holes.

The discovery and its implications were published today in the Physical Review Letter and the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

With this new discovery, we find Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity works incredible at even such extreme gravity stages.

Almost all recent breakthroughs in fundamental physics & astronomy are paid by taxpayers. Salaries, R&D, maintenance.

So communicating research to citizens, integrating it with education should be as crucial a yardstick as publishing in journals & conferences.

Alas...
There is just no system in almost any top-ranked institutes to ensure students & young researchers are trained+encouraged to communicate their work to broader society.

NSF grants have an entire section on Broader Impacts. So stop treating outreach as volunteering work.
Decades of looking down on science communication by those at the top of academic food chain - be it the National Academies, directors, tenure or fellowship committees - is the reason for the perpetual “lack of adequate funding from the government.”

It is a global disorder.

Starting a recurring thread on BLACK HOLES. From history to our modern understanding and, in between, any bizarre facts about it.
1. The idea of "dark stars" - from where light cannot escape - became obvious since we figured in the late 1600s that the speed of light is indeed finite. Here is a quote by philosopher-scientist John Michell from 1784.

2. After Einstein published his breakthrough paper on Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, it was known: (i) nothing travels faster than the speed of light, (ii) speed of light is constant for all observers. Therefore, a "dark star" is 'black' for all observers of the Universe.
