Let's talk about how Tucker Carlson mangles other people's words to create a completely false, incendiary narrative. 1/
He did this back in April with something @SRuhle said. We wrote about it at @mmfa here: mediamatters.org/coronavirus-co…
A more recent example, from last month, has to do with a clip posted by @therecount. The clip, which was from an interview between @jmpalmieri and Hillary Clinton, included a section where Clinton is asked what she thinks Trump would do in the event of a Biden win.
And she talks a bit about the GOP fight against absentee voting, about how their goal might be to have it so it appears Trump has a narrow electoral college lead on election night as they fight mail-in ballots from being counted.
And there's this concept called the "blue shift," which basically goes that as more votes get counted, more of them tend to go Dem based on what area they're coming from, etc. That's just a thing that happens, nothing out of the ordinary. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
You saw this after the 2018 midterms where Republicans were talking about how they actually did pretty well. But then as time passed, as votes were counted, more seats were flipped.
So, anyway, in the @therecount video, Clinton offers advice to Biden that he shouldn't concede the election *on election day.* Because there are undoubtedly still going to be ballots to count.
But here, let me show you the @therecount video vs. how Tucker Carlson covered it on August 25. Look how Carlson portrays her comments:
Carlson makes it sound like Clinton was talking about *never* conceding. She was very clearly talking about *on election night.* But this is better for making his audience mad.
Here’s the @therecount video, which includes the 53 seconds I had to fast forward through because of the 2:20 video time limit on my end
If you want to know how we’ve ended up in a world where we can’t agree on the basic facts of *anything,* a big part of it has to do with large groups of people getting their news from places like Fox
I only saw this specific example because I happened to be going through that day's episode for something else. That's how frequent it is: you'll run into absurd propaganda by total accident
