FL Hispanic voter/poll thread 1/10

Good news for Joe Biden: he leads Trump by 16 points with them in a new @EquisResearch poll

Bad news for him: that’s 11 points below what Clinton got when she narrowly lost the state

But the race is far from over...

politi.co/31Y0aPR
2) After months of criticism about his Hispanic outreach, Biden this week opened the floodgates. Harris gave a MegaTV interview, he spoke to Telemundo in Miami, he went on a hiring binge & is set to out-advertise Trump in Spanish-language media now

politi.co/31Y0aPR
3) Trump has also made Hispanic outreach a top FL priority. It’s a fight

“Both sides are locked in a death match, with crosswinds blowing in both directions that make the race end up the way most elections do in Florida: locked,” said Equis @carlosodio, politi.co/31Y0aPR
4) New FL polls have Biden w/a marginal lead in Trump’s must-win state. Though Biden’s underperforming Clinton w/Latinos, he’s doing well enough w/them & better than she with non-Hispanic whites & is pulling outsized Black support

politi.co/31Y0aPR
5) Equis’ poll is a high-quality survey with 1k respondents —a must in a dynamic state w/sizable populations of folks w/roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela & the greater Latin American world. Hispanics account for 17% of registered voters politi.co/31Y0aPR
6) Yesterday, there was a big hoopla over FL Hispanics in another poll that probably surveyed fewer than 190 of them. Folks, that’s not enough. You can get a seriously skewed sample that way because of the nature of the state’s Latino population politi.co/31Y0aPR
7) Trump’s campaign does not expect to win Florida Hispanics. Yes. Cuban Republicans have come home & he’s getting more men than in 2016. His path to victory is to hold Hispanic margins & turnout to 2018 levels & claw back more whites from Biden politi.co/31Y0aPR
8) Speaking of 2018, Equis @carlosodio said Biden’s on pace to eclipse former Sen. Bill Nelson’s Latino support when he lost the state by less than a point but a win “could come down to whether he's able to inch up a few points with Hispanics”
politi.co/31Y0aPR
9) On the Biden camp’s new hires: Christian Ulvert, a top strategist on Florida Latinos; Denise Lugo, a Puerto Rican outreach expert; strategic adviser Josh Romero, Hispanic digital specialist Mariana Castro, & Chris Wills as Hispanic vote director politi.co/31Y0aPR
10) The story also dives into issues of racism, socialism and immigration, so I’m not gonna tweet the whole thing. Y’all can argue about that in the menchies if ya wanna politi.co/31Y0aPR

Harris has raised enough money to burn a wet dog so it’s easy to see her plowing a few million on TV in Florida to juice poll numbers & see if team Trump bites

Had Biden made real ground/organizing investments since 2020, she’d have a good chance in FL

But they didn’t

1/4
2/4 Harris lead of 14pts in Miami-Dade is certainly believable & for dispirited Democrats who suffered through the Biden Era’s neglect of the state, it’s encouraging

But Trump won Florida by 1.2 in 2016 when he lost Dade by almost 30. He lost Dade by 7.3 in 2020 & won FL by 3.3
3/4
Polls have Trump up about 7 in FL. Republicans who know the state admit Harris is way tougher than Biden. They were looking at a double digit Trump win in FL w/Joe

Now it’s looking like single digits

It’s unlikely FL becomes in play this circle. But unlikely ≠ impossible

Filling in a blank in Gov @JoshShapiroPA’s Israel ties: from April-Sept 96, he worked in its DC embassy’s Hasbara/public affairs division

His past employment was flagged to me as his Israel positions have come under scrutiny now that he’s a Harris VP shortlister Image

FL’s Supreme Court ruled today to put an abortion rights amendment on the ballot AND struck down a prior court ruling that protected abortion rights

To pass, an amendment takes 60% voter approval in FL.

It will be on the general election ballot with Trump & Biden
2/5
Support for the FL abortion amendment is polling around 70%

That’s cutting it close

The FL GOP is opposed & amid partisan organized opposition, some FL amendments have lost about 10% support from baseline polling in the state

This can “fail” w/59% support
3/5
FL’s abortion amendment sidesteps the issue of weeks & instead blocks lawmakers from restricting abortion before “viability”

So if it passes, the GOP legislature could define viability in a restrictive way that will trigger more lawsuits before a conservative SCOFL Image

Ron DeSantis's presidential bid is a dead campaign walking after Trump throttled him in must-win Iowa

A year ago, DeSantis was the best hope for Republicans hoping to turn the page from Trump

Here's the inside story of how Trump crushed DeSantis

It's debatable if Trump is beatable in a GOP primary

But DeSantis wasn't ready for primetime & he wasn't ready for this.

"DeSantis never established dominance," said Trump co-campaign manager @LaCivitaC

DeSantis set up a campaign structure to deliver him the news he wanted, discarding data-based advice he disagreed with, whether it was likability or abortion
