/ I find it incredibly disheartening to continue to read provincial and regional documents showing the largest financial threat to the City of Brampton is...

The City of Brampton

What happened now? A lot
/ So, the Region of Peel has put out a new piece on Major Transit Station Areas, which are areas to intensify around Major Transit (GO, Subway, LRT, BRT). And they used stuff the municipalities put out as source material.
/ So, for colour scheme, green means it is in the 2019 Growth Plan, so ones decreed by the province, blue is other ones. First there is the central, north south, green stations, that is for the Hurontario LRT. then there is the Kitchener GO line, and the 403 Busway.
/ The cluster of three blue circles at the bottom right is the small Lakeshore BRT, the major blue circles line spanning the width of Mississauga is the Dundas BRT which is already getting funding from the province, it pays to be a proactive municipality, good job Mayor Crombie.
/ Then further north there is the Queen Street BRT stations, from downtown to Highway 50. Then you have a series of blue circles at interchanges for the 407, that is for the distant planned 407 Transitway. There are also planned MTSAs along the Milton GO line.
/ There are also a couple of other ones, like the two at Square One, Mississauga still wants an LRT loop. Trinity Commons has one due to the bus terminal. The one in Bolton is because Caledon dreams of a GO line along that rail corridor, & there is also an MTSA for Mayfield West
/ So, what does this have to do with the City of Brampton being a financial threat to itself? If you look at the map, see that Mississauga has far more, why? Because they put the work in, Brampton hasn't. It doesn't appear to have the capacity to work on more than two RT lines.
/ It needs to hire more staff to work on additional ones, but that costs money, so it sucks to be not downtown Brampton because muh tax cuts (property tax doesn't adjust for inflation so a 0% increase is a de facto tax cut).
/ Despite the 2015 Transportation Master Plan envisioning a Rapid Transit line of some sort stretching along Highway 10 to Mayfield by 2031, that isn't happening, because the City is too focused on a tunneled LRT to downtown. Until downtown is figure out, the rest must wait.
/ Steeles and Bovaird are both going to be major issues for the City because of insufficient transportation capacity. The City plans to add eighty thousand people in Uptown, and RioCan already submitted plans to redevelop Shoppers, but no Steeles BRT planning is happening.
/ How are 80k people supposed to get around without higher order transit? And no, a Main Street LRT won't work, downtown is too small, unless the City is willing to go urban renewal expropriate leveling blocks of homes for redevelopment. We need a major E-W connector, Steeles.
/ A Steeles BRT would connect multiple major employment MTSAs, Bramalea GO, Uptown, Bram West (Steeles and Mississauga Road), not to mention Sheridan College and Humber, to the Hurontario LRT. Without it, Steeles will be clogged by all the added car traffic.
/ For Heritage Heights, they plan to add something like 150k people in that area, and there is no current transportation plan to handle it. Due to agglomeration economics, Heritage Heights is unlikely to meet the employment targets, which means tons more traffic.
/ The roads connecting to it, can't handle the sheer volume of traffic, and no amount of widening will fix it, so we have to plan for rapid transit along Bovaird
/ Of course, since the City hasn't bothered to start planning for these major transit routes, neither is the Region of Peel, and Regional Official Plans last a long time, the current one was originally approved in 1996.
/ Because neither the City of Brampton, nor the Region of Peel are planning for these, neither is the Province of Ontario, and remember, Rapid Transit takes 10+ years to get done; the Hurontario LRT was originally announced in 2007, and the ETA is 2024.
/ Development doesn't wait for transit infrastructure, so if you think think Brampton's traffic situation is bad now, just wait until poor city planning adds another 100k cars to the road. The only way to make this affordable is with rapid transit.
/ What the City Council doesn't seem to want to talk about, is the fact that the City of Brampton is currently running an internal deficit of over $100 million, per year. That is how much we are deferring, and note, there are also penalties for that internal borrowing.
/ If you keep a road in a state of good repair, it can last a very long time, but if you don't then it can need a full rebuild, which is very costly, and can cost significantly more than keeping it in a state of good repair. A chart showing road quality degradation over time, regular
/ There are two ways to close that gap, major intensification, or major tax hikes (or some combination), to do the former we need the Steeles & Bovaird BRTs, otherwise we default to the latter, of massive tax hikes and horrific congestion.
/ Hopefully my rambling thread made sense, if you have questions, feel free to ask them.
