Covid "fears" are being triggered and encouraged by well organised white supremacist groups, the same ones who turned up on St Kilda beach to protest "African gangs." This isn't local, it's international. Similar protests are happening across Europe, using the same messaging.
They share views of anti-vaxxers, anti-Muslim,anti-migration, anti-marriage equality, anti-feminist reactionaries and activists, arguing that Covid restrictions are part of a sinister agenda to curb the "freedoms" of mostly white majorities, although why becomes fuzzy.

Tony Abbott as a UK trade "adviser" isn't a joke, or surprising, because Abbott has links with the better heeled end of this alt-right nuttocracy, in the UK, the US, Hungary and elsewhere. They rail against the EU, UN, any threat to white male power globally. 
Abbott praised the anti-migrant stance of Hungary's far-right PM Viktor Orbán, and cemented his profile in far right circles by saying a Brexit defeat for Britain would be akin to losing the Falklands war. theguardian.com/australia-news…
Abbott is a product of rightwing thinktanks and now their pin-up boy. His downfall is seen as an example of the sinister activism of global climate, feminist, "cultural Marxist," LGBTQI inclined, anti-Christian anti-white conspiracy. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The mask has become a symbol of how this "conspiracy" is supposedly acting to "oppress" the very people who voted for Tony Abbott in the first place, who remain hostile to non white migrants, the indigenous, gays, feminists, scientists - especially medical "authorities."
