Unpopular opinion: I'm not really appealed by the idea of WhiteHat Jr., atleast not till coding becomes a part of our curriculum. This will only put extra load on a budding childhood, which is already being taken away slowly due to heavy expectations from a kid in today's world.
It should be ok if your child cannot develop their own app. Childhood is the time to read, play, dance, explore interests, not to restrict oneself to a 13" screen developing apps, esp. cos that's what will make them "The Next Elon Musk".Promote logic building & aptitude, not this.
I never knew about Ubuntu or coding until first day at college. Scored horribly initially. Felt lost. 4 yrs later, I can now code in 25+ frameworks, have worked with IITB and ISRO, & have presented research at A+ conferences. What helped?:Logic, dedication & willingness to learn.
Today, I miss those football games, weekly novel reads, cycling, WWE, 1 extra hr of carefree cricket more than I regret not having started coding since childhood. There are way better options to build logical skills, without needing screens or such pressure tactics on parents.
Beyond curriculum, extra time on a laptop means lesser real world experiences. Most of us will be spending our adulthood this way, let's spare the childhoods atleast! Digital world can never imitate the real one. Ppl who feel they were restricted as a child, now often complain.
Complain about their struggle with communicating, anxiety, lack of confidence in public. Why? Because they were often restricted from exploring, and weren't given the freedom to commit mistakes, and learn from it. There's a lot more to life than just coding and system designs.
As adults, our choices & freedoms keep getting narrow. Let's not start from childhood. As mentioned earlier, this is only for tech-skilling beyond curriculum.
"But what if they themselves want to start coding?": The current internet resources have already produced many prodigies
"But the competition": Well who has created this competition? Societal pressure & parents who feel their child should get an early start in this rat race. If society has a whole promoted exploration and creativity over stereotyped choices, we would be a happier and better world.
Summing up, take it easy. Not every fun/side activity needs to have a learning motive. Unrestricted, unexpected joys and happiness are what define childhood. Wander, wonder and make those blunders. For loops and while loops and apps can wait :) n/n
