The Hungarian ruling party, Fidesz, has led a full-on assault against independent media to undermine critics & those who would expose their corruption.

Throughout it all - with every step that the Hungarian ruling party has destroyed democracy and brought dictatorship to the heart of the EU - the European People's Party @EPP has stood by it, refusing to #ExpelFidesz from the party group.
The @EPP president, @donaldtuskEPP, has even said an infamous Nazi legal expert would be “proud” of Orbán.

Yet Tusk absurdly remains the head of the European People's Party despite Fidesz’s ongoing membership.

So, @EPP, will it ever end? Is there nothing that will stop you from supporting the party that is now running a dictatorship in Hungary?

The party that your own president compared to Nazis?

Looking forward to your reply.
Does this mean the @EPP is avoiding a decision to #ExpelFidesz yet again?

The European People's Party keeps enabling a dictator...
The European People’s Party has had years to #ExpelFidesz. Instead, they stood by & supported the destruction of democracy in Hungary under their partner party there. Now, they’re blaming Covid for not doing it... 🙄

Prepare for @EPP’s next excuse: “The dog ate my homework.”
Hey, I can't quite recall. Which European party group is Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov’s ruling GERB party in?

@EPP, would you happen to know?
"Hungary heads EU anti-fraud investigation list - again"

Congratulations, Viktor Orbán & Fidesz!

And congratulations, @donaldtuskEPP & the whole @EPP! Orbán couldn't have done it without you!

Convincing people that they have fundamental rights takes no effort at all.

Convincing them that others have fundamental rights is the hard part.
I want to write about these things in ways that might encourage new people to warm to the idea of universal human rights.

I don’t feel you can do that by using language and tropes that immediately spark “culture war” reactions - those cliché phrases that close minds instantly.
That’s been the purpose of my newsletter over the past year: to find language that brings people closer to understanding the fundamental rights that bind us together.

Mass drownings at sea are to the EU what mass shootings are to the US.

It keeps happening.

And every time it happens, politicians pretend to be concerned, yet keep in place the government policies at the root of the problem.

So, people keep dying.

What can be done?

Start with official, proactive search and rescue at sea.

Some EU states have drastically reduced search-and-rescue capacity at sea, and even restricted private groups from doing it.

Accepting mass drownings is a deliberate EU policy choice.

They have deliberated. They have discussed the options, and they know the consequences of the policy they chose.

It doesn't have to be this way.

There are other policy options, like making human life the priority.
