Marco Mendicino Canada's Minister of Immigration stated in his first major policy speech upon assumption of office in 2019 that

Canada's major immigration goal is to welcome one million immigrants over the next 3 years, despite the upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has stuck to that master plan recording high levels of immigration in 2020.

Mendicino stated that this plan is necessary due to Canada’s demographic realities. As an ageing country with a low birth rate, Canadians are living longer and not having enough children to maintain the size of its population.

Mendicino said a major part of the solution is to welcome immigrants. Today, some 80 percent of Canada’s population growth will come from immigration, and estimates suggest this will reach 100 percent by the 2030s.

This is why Canada will welcome over one million immigrants over the next three years, said Mendicino

According to the master plan, Canada will bring in 341,000 people this year through various immigration pathways namely the

Express Entry, the provincial Nominee program and the Canadian Experience Class.
