If you’ve ever been in a fab, you may know that the photolithography area is lit by yellow lights to keep the photoresist from breaking down.

The #CameronPeakFire reminds me of this, and we got our first snowfall made of ash (with water-based snow due tomorrow). ImageImageImageImage
This is a different fire from the one I posted about previously here. It’s noticeably more orange today.
I regularly see memes from friends in other states bragging about their crazy weather, but this is CO right now, so checkmate everyone else Image
Two days ago vs this morning. 🔥 ❄️ Image

I finally got a chance to read through this and I’ll point out some interesting gems.
Many of you know that prior to K5 AMD was a second-source supplier for Intel x86 chips. The reverse engineering process involved many trips to the local CVS photo department (or was it Walgreens?).

(I think this was during @Krewell’s tenure at AMD?)
Historical note: do I need to mention that in the age before smartphones, people took photos, then had to drop off the film at a local store to have it developed and then pick it up a few days later? 😬

Tempted to apply at Samsung IT, delete their NFT products from databases and backups, and immediately put in my two weeks notice.

theverge.com/2022/1/2/22858…
It’s equally depressing that a company as large as Samsung will spend effort on this and that the Verge is uncritically selling this feature ImageImageImage
Plenty of folks have dunked on the Matt Damon commercial but wtf ImageImage

I started at AMD in 2001, so I have some experience with this.

Time for a trip down memory row/column/bank.

Goddamn it Stacy
True. This was before my time but I’ve heard some fascinating tales of the reverse engineering process.

<deep inhale>
hahahahahahaaahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahhahahahahhah!!
My insurance sent me a letter 3 weeks before my refill to tell me that they’d no longer be covering a specific inhaler, so I’d have to see a doctor for a new prescription. During a global pandemic. While there’s smoke from wildfires. While UHC is raking in record profits. 🤑
I complained to my benefits dept and one thing the rep told me was, “there could be multiple reasons they decided to drop coverage. For example a patent may have expired” as if that’s supposed to be better.

“The models were all wrong!” said people who know nothing about models. (Please read past the accurate but clickbait-ish title).

theatlantic.com/technology/arc…
Models
* are a representation of something else like chip performance, spread of infectious disease, or tax revenue
* can be a software program, a spreadsheet, math equations
The purpose of a model
* is *not* to accurately predict the future
* is to tell you possible outcomes
* is to guide decisions by running multiple “what if” scenarios

Since Little Richard died 🥺, I remember reading about the Payola scandal of the 1950s and 60s and how LR was related to it. This is from electoral-vote.com/evp2019/Pres/M… and not me. BTW this is very long and I made minor edits to get them to fit in tweets. #RIPLittleRichard
Let's start with a brief thought exercise. Imagine someone you know who is at least 65 years old. Do you think that person knows what a tramp stamp is? What YOLO means? What you are suggesting when you tell someone to keep it 100?
What are you proposing if you ask someone if they would like to come over to your place and Netflix and chill? The odds are pretty good that the average senior citizen today would not understand all (or even most) of these. Keep that in mind, it will soon be relevant.
