I finally got a chance to read through this and I’ll point out some interesting gems. Many of you know that prior to K5 AMD was a second-source supplier for Intel x86 chips. The reverse engineering process involved many trips to the local CVS photo department (or was it Walgreens?).

(I think this was during @Krewell’s tenure at AMD?)

Tempted to apply at Samsung IT, delete their NFT products from databases and backups, and immediately put in my two weeks notice.

theverge.com/2022/1/2/22858… It’s equally depressing that a company as large as Samsung will spend effort on this and that the Verge is uncritically selling this feature ImageImageImage

I started at AMD in 2001, so I have some experience with this.

Time for a trip down memory row/column/bank.

hahahahahahaaahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhahahhahahahahhah!! My insurance sent me a letter 3 weeks before my refill to tell me that they’d no longer be covering a specific inhaler, so I’d have to see a doctor for a new prescription. During a global pandemic. While there’s smoke from wildfires. While UHC is raking in record profits. 🤑

If you’ve ever been in a fab, you may know that the photolithography area is lit by yellow lights to keep the photoresist from breaking down.

The #CameronPeakFire reminds me of this, and we got our first snowfall made of ash (with water-based snow due tomorrow). ImageImageImageImage This is a different fire from the one I posted about previously here. It’s noticeably more orange today.

“The models were all wrong!” said people who know nothing about models. (Please read past the accurate but clickbait-ish title).

* can be a software program, a spreadsheet, math equations

Since Little Richard died 🥺, I remember reading about the Payola scandal of the 1950s and 60s and how LR was related to it. This is from electoral-vote.com/evp2019/Pres/M… and not me. BTW this is very long and I made minor edits to get them to fit in tweets. #RIPLittleRichard Let's start with a brief thought exercise. Imagine someone you know who is at least 65 years old. Do you think that person knows what a tramp stamp is? What YOLO means? What you are suggesting when you tell someone to keep it 100?

To my surprise we let multiple cats out of the bag recently. Here’s some of what I’ve worked on over the past few years.

8 MI compute GPUs (6 xGMI links per GPU) in a near fully-connected ring topology.

IMO this point isn’t brought up enough, so you get boomers saying “well, don’t get a loan you can’t pay off. Hurr durr stoopid millennials!” One of the first big life decisions for kids entering adulthood shouldn’t be an open ended loan that could haunt them for life. For example, these fucking guys. (BTW, Google is a major donor to this group)

This dude, in trying to defend the current US health care system, shows us how fucked up it is. He writes a 20-tweet thread explaining how a NYT writer could have health care by spending her free time jumping through hoops, signing up for COBRA and not paying the bill. Mothers don’t have anything better to do with all their free time, right?

I’m wrapping up a week in Austin, and it was an *intense* week. The whole SARC news has really disrupted things, but I’m hopeful they’ll find new gigs soon. I’ve been jokingly blaming Filippo for this because the huge increase in the A76 perf made many custom Arm cores irrelevant, but there is some truth to that.

This my periodic call for applications to AMD’s Server Performance Group. This is an opportunity to work with me (or for me 😳) on shaping The Future™ of server architecture and memory systems.

There is a common misconception I still see periodically that ARM has power advantages over x86. Not true. They’re just ISAs that happen to serve different markets (smartphones and tablets vs. laptops/desktops/servers) 1/6 The decode complexity of x86 adds a minimal amount of extra transistors relative to the overall CPU transistor budget.

Modern techniques like Zen’s op cache can further mitigate the power consumption from beefier decoders.

@TMFChipFool I can't speak for team blue, but I strongly disagree. I've been involved in recruiting and hiring for most of my career, and this talk about diversity bias is, in my experience, absolutely false. If someone is willing to provide evidence to the contrary, I'm open to it @TMFChipFool There are many factors that affect the quality of the talent pool (morale, profitability, state of the economy, corporate culture, retention policies, location). IMNSHO diversity bias is a convenient scapegoat.

Hi @chafkin. EPYC by @AMDServer is an alternative supplier, they’re not vulnerable to Meltdown, and they’re great products too. “The company has no competitor in server chips at the moment, but this incident could change that.”

Folks like @paulkrugman, @BruceBartlett, and @NormOrnstein/Tom Mann have been saying this for YEARS.

Also shameful: @SenBobCorker: the lone R “no” vote; he could’ve killed it in committee.

@AARP+@AARPadvocates for waiting until the last minute to speak out.

#TaxScam @paulkrugman @BruceBartlett @SenBobCorker @AARP @AARPadvocates From 2010, when Krugman (rightfully) called @SpeakerRyan a policy fraud:
