The ability to send a well crafted cold DM is more powerful than any resume

(and probably more powerful than any cold email too)

Here is a breakdown of how to send killer DMs that stand out
1/ We’re going to be using this DM I received last week as a case study

it’s the best DM i’ve received since working at the Brew

let’s break it down Image
2/ Very clear as to what job they are looking for

this saves a lot of headaches for me because it gets to the point immediately

also filling out the application THEN sending the DM demonstrates their level of seriousness about the role

that's the correct order of operations Image
3/ Uses an inside joke

this sentence is probably the most valuable one in the whole DM because it shows a good level of familiarity with the content i post on twitter

now i'm more inclined to listen cuz i know we're on the same side and they value what i value Image
4/ Shows credibility

this bit of self-promotion is crucial

now i take them even more seriously because they have some relevant experience

also bonus points for that experience being super unique

not many other people make content for 20,000+ people Image
5/ One criticism

i wish they had just sent me their portfolio over DMs

make it as easy as possible for the recipient of the DM to do what you want them to do

don't make me leave twitter, just send it in a follow up message Image
6/ Finish with another inside joke

I had interacted with this person before, complimenting a stellar thread they had written

bringing it up as another little inside joke between us cements the personal feel of the DM Image
7/ Build a relationship beforehand

Cold Twitter DMs hold one crucial advantage over cold emails: you have the opportunity to freely interact with that person on the timeline and under their tweets

DO THAT FIRST

build a relationship outside the DMs before sliding in Image
8/ Final thoughts

A cold DM will never land you a job

what you do after will land you the job

once you start that relationship, don't let it die

show them what you can do

If you are getting into long distance running for the first time in 2024, please read this: Image
1. 80% of your runs should be at an easy conversational pace. 20% should be breathless at the edge of your aerobic threshold.

2. Shoes do matter. Go get fitted and rotate pairs to avoid wear. Recovery runs, speed work, and long runs should be done in different shoes ideally.
3. Get a heart rate monitor. You can't follow the 80/20 rule if you don't know how hard you are pushing yourself.

4. Increase your mileage by no more than 10% per week. Any bigger jumps will lead to injury, almost guaranteed.

Today, I sent the first edition of The Game

At the bottom, I included a game I invented called

The Button

Here’s how it works (and how you can play)
The rules are simple

Readers can click The Button or not

Totally up to them
Then they guess how many clicks The Button will get

I provide them with the email list size

They respond to the email with their guess

Lil Nas X goes viral whenever he wants

And he does it without spending a dime

Here's the story of how he went from penniless to Grammy winner (and what you can learn from it):
Lil Nas X dropped out of college to pursue music at 19

but he didn't actually make much music at first

instead, he was obsessed with Twitter

he ran a Nicki Minaj stan account that he eventually grew to around 30,000 followers
But success on Twitter didn't translate to musical success

"I’d post a funny meme and get 2,000 retweets. Then I’d post a song and get 10," Nas said.

I've talked to nearly 100 startup founders since joining @launchhouse

a lot of them are making the exact same marketing mistakes

here are the 10 most common marketing pitfalls I see (that you can avoid):
1. Assuming people care

until you give them a reason to, no one gives a shit about what you are building

the best way to fix this is to talk to customers individually

it doesn't scale, but it’s a necessity early on (and can help you write website and advertising copy later on)
2. Leading with education

founders think they need to teach their audience first

but an unproven startup is not where people go for educational content

it’s better to sell status first, then educate later

(this issue is especially prevalent in web3 startups)

Memes are the most powerful, most underrated, and most misunderstood item in a startup founders toolkit

a thread on how to use memes to grow your startup
1/ Why memes?

memes are great tools at showcasing four things that startups need

+ positioning
+ progress
+ community
+ credibility
2/ Positioning

a great way to position your startup is through contrast

highlight the status quo then pit yourself against it

"Contrast burns your brand into the customer's mind."

This week, I worked on establishing content pillars at @launchhouse

Here are the four tenets that will define our content
𝐖𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬

We tell their stories, highlight their wins, and amplify their needs to a wider audience. When one of us wins, we all win.
𝐖𝐞 𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬

We curate and create content that will help builders become more effective and knowledgeable. Smarter builders are better builders.
