Twelve more Iowans have died from coronavirus, pushing the state's total to 1,185 since first death on March 24.

These deaths make coronavirus already the 7th leading killer in Iowa for a year, on pace to be third leading killer for the year.

Deaths were reported in Carroll, Cerro Gordo, Clinton, Jasper, Linn (2), Plymouth, Polk (3), Tama, and Winneshiek Counties.

Iowans in 86 of our 99 counties have been killed by COVID-19.

Please mourn the dead, support loved ones and caregivers, and help stop the spread!

On a day when 12 more deaths are being reported, the state is also reporting that hospitalizations for COVID-19 dropped by 4 to 322, including 83 in intensive care units (down 9).

There were 32 new admissions to Iowa hospitals for COVID-19 in the last 24-hour period.

Between 10 am Sept. 8 and 10 am Sept. 9, the state reported 478 new cases, pushing Iowa's total to 71,137.

Subtracting deaths (1,185) and "recoveries" (50,937), there are 19,015 "active" cases in the state - third day in a row over 19,000, highest numbers yet.

The state is also reporting 2,988 new tests (increase from 673,614 to 676,602), which means the rate of tests showing COVID-19 was 16.0%.

Too many deaths, hospitalizations, and cases, rate of tests showing COVID-19 is too high.

Iowans, we can do better than this!

The 77 counties where Gov. Reynolds first loosened Iowa's limited restrictions May 1 without an alternative safety plan were up 204 new cases for total of 26,293.

They had 5 more deaths reported for a total of 379.

On April 30, they had 559 total cases and 11 deaths.

No new cases: Adams, Calhoun, Cass, Clay, Floyd, Greene, Grundy, Guthrie, Hamilton, Hancock, Harrison, Humboldt, Keokuk, Madison, Mills, Monona, Montgomery, Osceola, Pocahontas, Shelby, Taylor, and Union, while Audubon, Dickinson, and Jefferson were adjusted down one.

Overall, 52 of the 77 counties had new cases reported.

Best day in state: Keokuk with 0 new cases on 24 tests.

Least testing: Harrison and Osceola with 0 new cases on 1 test each.

Iowa Dep't of Corrections reports 6 more inmates (from 809 to 815) and 3 more staff (from 117 to 120) have tested positive, but also says more have "recovered."

Also, death of another inmate due to coronavirus at Oakdale facility. That's now 4 inmates who have died from it.
