The Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) people say they feel they've been robbed of a chance to express their views on Rio Tinto's destruction of ancient rock shelters at Juukan Gorge because of the delays to the federal inquiry's visit to the Pilbara. #RioTinto
The PKKP's chairman John Ashburton has released a statement overnight calling on the committee to reschedule the visit "as a matter of urgency" so it can see the full impact of the destruction before rehabilitation works start at the site.
"Prolonging this investigation only serves to further deepen our hurt and anguish about the irretrievable loss of connection to our ancestors and our country," Mr Ashburton said.
"The community deserves the full facts of the Juukan Gorge disaster to be told in a timely manner to ensure this kind of tragedy never happens again," Mr Ashburton said.
The PKKP says special allowances should be made to enable the members of the inquiry to travel to WA. It says the decision to delay the visit "serves to rob us of a voice in the proceedings".
"To date, Rio Tinto and others have been given a voice and public stage to present their views on the disaster. The same courtesy has been denied to us by this delay," Mr Ashburton said.
