Good morning everyone. Is it Friday already? We're having a Health Commission meeting this morning, 10-11:30am. Find the agenda at the link below. As always, I will try to provide a recap of the meeting later for the timeline's enjoyment. cityclerk.kcmo.org/LiveWeb/Boards…
A recap on yesterday's Health Commission meeting:

Business Session:

/Minutes of Aug. 14th meeting approved.
Action Item:

/Approval of Amended Commission Bylaws, approved.

The bylaws provided minor changes to what constituted a quorum, who was considered an active member, and the total number of members any committee could have. It was asked that we review in 6 months these by-laws.
New Business:

/Urban Neighborhood Initiative Presentation. Dianne Cleaver presented on a set aside policy her org. has been working on. The policy would require a certain % of units be set aside as affordable in new developments receiving incentives.
/UNI Presentation Con't. Mrs. Cleaver asked that the Commission sign onto a letter of support of this policy. It was asked that the letter be shared with Commissioners. A vote on if the Commission will/ will not support the policy is planned for our Oct. meeting.
/My thoughts: I support a set aside policy. It's an important step in the right direction towards greater housing affordability in Kansas City. When a vote presents itself to support UNI's policy recommendations re: set asides, I will plan to vote yes.
New Business:

/Ad Hoc Housing Committee. This is a measure that I have been advocating. I presented last meeting on why we the Commission should have a housing specific committee. It was asked that we take the next month to draft vision/mission language before forming the group
/Housing Committee Con't. We did that & came up with language that is added to this thread.

Vision: We envision safe, accessible, equitable healthy housing for all in Kansas City.
/Housing Committee Con't.

Mission: We believe that housing is a human right. We seek to join and collaborate with the growing coalition of change makers who are developing solutions to housing injustice in Kansas City. Con't.
/Housing Committee Con't.

Mission Con't.: We set the intention to work at the intersection of housing and health, advancing policies that undue harmful systems perpetuating unhealthy and unsafe housing conditions in our community.
/Housing Committee Con't.

Mission Con't.: Our mission is to ensure all people have opportunity to access safe, truly affordable, equitable healthy housing in Kansas City.
We welcome feedback! With some minor adjustments, overall, folks were agreeable to the language and the housing committee was formed(!) with recommendation that we also bring in staff from Housing + Health Dept. so we don't overlap in work and we stay focused on the mission.
We have a dynamic group of individuals who have experience in broad sectors of our community - tenant advocacy, health care, architecture + design, education. And we welcome more. Reach out to me or our chair @TianaCaldwell15, because everyone has a stake in housing justice.
New Business:

/Forces of Change - KC CHIP. As the timeline may know from previous Commission updates I've shared, we are in the midst of updating the KC CHIP. This new plan will help shape health policy in Kansas City over the next five years.
/KC CHIP. I'll share more as I learn more. The Forces of Change - KC CHIP was presented as a way for Commissioners to participate in the CHIP planning process.
/KC CHIP. The information/feedback received from Commissioners who are able to participate in this working group later this month would be in addition to the data/information/feedback the committee has already received from other stakeholders.
Old Business:

/Violence Prevention Funding. The ordinances introduced a few months ago that would remove existing violence prevention funding are expected to be heard in committee next week when Council reconvenes. Remember that the Commission voted to NOT support these
Committee Updates:

CHIP Planning Committee: They continue to gather feedback from the community, are working on recommendations to put into the final CHIP, and working towards being able to present to the Commission by the end of year.
Committee Updates:

Budget & Contracts: They are reviewing applications for grant funding from the Health Levy. Once reviewed, the applications will be presented to the full Commission.

Education: New chairs have been appointed and they plan to reconvene next week!
Committee Updates:

Birth Equity: This committee submitted a grant proposal and will learn if they were provided it in the coming months.

Most meetings are open to the public. Subscribe to the City Clerk's email list for notifications when they meet + links to Skype/Zoom
COVID Updates:

Dr. Archer provided updates on COVID. The bottom line is that things are still in a precarious situation. So please keep wearing masks. And maintain an appropriate social distance. it's the easiest thing to do to help control the spread of COVID.
That is all. As always, I'm sure I missed a lot. And Twitter doesn't provide a good platform for getting into the nuance and detail of specific conversations. So I welcome any additions by other Commissioners/Co-Chairs to this thread.

Peace & Love to everyone.
