To all the brown people out there today (especially): YOU ARE AMERICAN ENOUGH. You make this country better and you deserve to be here and be treated with respect.
I see a lot of folks trying to reframe 9/11 as when magically for a moment we stopped being racist?
On 9/11 I was in Boston, having just arrived to the lab when I /2001 heard about the tragedy. Over the course of the next several days, I was yelled at from passing cars, called a sand N-word, had my hat knocked off my head walking to MIT.
It's 1991, I'm walking home from school as a rock flies past me. It's the (first) Persian Gulf war. I'm confused as I'm Iranian and not Iraqi, but that subtelty is lost on most. I decide to go by "Bob" at school.
Summer 1999, I'm flying between Oakland and Seattle. I'm stopped at airport security again. It's the 5th time in 6 flights. Security actually got better for me *after* 9/11 when they realized random searches were more effective.
I've heard the horror stories from my dad in following the hostage crisis and rising tensions with Iran in the late 70s and early 80s and talked about them here before. Getting attacked in the streets.
The parties where I was told to "go home" when I didn't agree with the choices being made in America. You want me to go back to.... Oakland?
Part of the reason why I did a red, white, and blue haircut for the Mars landing was to prove that I *am* American.
It shouldn’t be that way. I study spacecraft failure for a reason - to avoid making the same mistakes again.
There's a tendency to remember the past as better, which is also why so many people seem to want to return there, but I am here to make the future better, and to remind us that if we don't learn from our failures that won't happen.

With love from this Iranian-American

Every time I see Jupiter and its large moons, I think about how amazing it must’ve been for Galileo to observe this dance in the night sky
Like can you imagine seeing these “stars” twirl around Jupiter and being like “Whoa dude” (experts do not agree that this quote is from Galileo and in fact may be from this author’s love of Bill & Ted). This is Galileo’s observations in 1610 (410 years ago)
Also fun fact, Galileo wanted to name the four moons after his patrons, the Medicis, and I have yet to see anyone offer this good a tier on Patreon. It was Kepler who suggested the mythological references we know and love today.

Sharing is caring, and I want to share with you one of the tricks we use at NASA to address risk. We all have risks / challenges in our lives.
(Don't be scared by the matrix)
I've used this for things that are uncertain in my personal life too. There's a few parts, so stick with me. The first part is to write down the risk in a "if x, because y, then z" format
So for example, If the spacecraft blows up, because a new hire sends the wrong command, then no more science

I gave a talk yesterday about Fault Protection, the work we do to ensure errors in our spacecraft don’t result in mission failure, and I used this quote from Futurama:
And it got me thinking how true that is about our current situation. In spacecraft we spend years behind the scenes making those missions work and if it all goes to plan a lot of that work never sees the light of day.
I spent months on a scenario where @MarsCuriosity got stuck in Earth orbit and we had to safely get the nuclear materials into the Pacific using the control thrusters for the entry into Mars atmosphere. Thank goodness we never used it.

This year can we just all toast to Betelgeuse going supernova so we can start the 2020s out with a *sight* in the night sky heralding a change here on Earth
To be fair, since Betelgeuse is like 500-700 light years away I guess unless toasts work through some undiscovered scientific principle of time travel, this may be pointless
There is a very interesting paper about a chain of events from supernovae a few million years ago prompting humans to walk upright, maybe this could just be a time where we simply evolve to be more caring towards each other and the planet. Thank you

I’ve been thinking this week about why the March For Our Lives protests gives me so much hope for our future, and, as an engineer, I think I’ve put my finger on it.
Often times in engineering & science it's easy to let past experience dictate future development; to say because something hasn't been done before it's impossible or too difficult.
Take SpaceX, for example. Landing rockets reliably was one of those things that people looked at before and decided wasn't worth it (many reasons, but technical challenges among them). SpaceX & Elon Musk challenged those preconceived notions and we got Falcon 9 & Heavy.

Happy birthday @NichelleIsUhura!

I have a story to tell (a thread):
A few years ago, we had an @NASA event at @PNBallet, featuring ballet & music set to space imagery, where @NichelleIsUhura performed
The next morning I got a text from the conductor, letting me know that she was on the same flight, so I found her in line, helped her through security, & chatted in the lounge. When it came time for the flight, she was in first and I went back to my seat in coach.
