EXCLUSIVE: Trump appointees interfered with CDC’s weekly reports on Covid-19 — and even tried to halt the reports altogether. politico.com/news/2020/09/1…
HHS spokesperson Caputo and his aides have targeted the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports — a pillar of U.S. medical research — arguing that scientists are intentionally trying to undermine Trump’s message. politico.com/news/2020/09/1…
In one email to CDC officials obtained by POLITICO, a Caputo aide blistered scientists and called for already-published reports to be retroactively altered.
Former senior Obama HHS official sends me this about their approach to CDC reports. (Shared with permission.)

BREAKING: Inspector general finds that Trump health deputy SEEMA VERMA’s publicity contracts broke federal rules.

politico.com/news/2020/07/1… with @adamcancryn

Verma spent $5M-plus on contracts that were halted by POLITICO investigation.
Verma hired GOP consultants to write her speeches, book her media — and do her tweets — despite having comms office staffed with 200+ civil servants.

Taxpayer $$ went to allies and longtime GOPers, including former head of Trump’s presidential transition. politico.com/news/2020/07/1…
Verma testified to Congress last year that the contracts were focused on promoting the agency, not her, sparking this fight with @RepJoeKennedy, who said the $$ was wasted and better spent on providing health care to kids.

More TK

hhs.gov/about/news/202…
NEW: The Trump administration says it’s “restoring the rule of law” by formally rolling back LGBTQ patient protections today.

Advocates ask why it’s coming amid a pandemic — and on four-year anniversary of deadly Pulse shooting.

politico.com/news/2020/06/1…
How HHS describes the move

CIVIL RIGHTS CHIEF ROGER SEVERINO: “It will eliminate mass confusion that was unleashed by the Obama-era decision to redefine sex to cover a wide array of gender identities, when sex as a biological reality is so important to the practice of medicine.”

1. Grateful to those who spoke with me for this story and the many readers who engaged with it.

I know these issues stir strong feelings — people's lives are on the line — and tried to read as many replies/DMs as possible. Can't respond to everyone so hoping a thread is useful.
2. But first: wanted to acknowledge that many people in public health strongly disputed the idea behind the story, arguing that it missed their message.

Here's a thread from the passionate @gregggonsalves, who explains at length how he thinks I failed.
3. At the same time, Gregg's colleague @NAChristakis seizes on the argument that animated the story: there are real questions about experts' credibility if they're perceived to be making a U-turn. (Full disclosure: I prefer this interpretation.)

Mayo Clinic requires all visitors to wear a mask. Will Mike Pence do so today? Famed hospital punted Qs about the visit from the VP, who has avoided wearing a mask in photo opps.
Here’s a masked Gov. Jared Polis meeting an unmasked Pence in VP’s trip to Colorado 10 days ago.
PENCE flouts Mayo Clinic policy that everyone on campus wear a mask, even as he meets with staff and a patient.

NEW: The complicated ouster of top vaccine scientist RICK BRIGHT — a fight over Covid-19 treatment and his management decisions, and the Trump team’s push to oust him dating back more than a year. politico.com/news/2020/04/2…
Bright led the health department’s vaccine arm until this week — reportedly finding out about his transfer when he couldn’t get into his email.

Bright told NYT’s @maggienyt today he was forced out for opposing malaria drugs touted by Trump.
But Trump appointees had been trying to oust Bright for more than a year, unhappy with his management. POLITICO first learned about those disputes last year, before the Covid-19 outbreak hit the U.S.

Bright didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment across Wednesday.

NEW: The White House limited the Surgeon General’s media appearances last week, even as Trump faces growing questions about Covid-19 and racial disparities. politico.com/news/2020/04/2…
The surgeon general made just one TV appearance between April 11 and April 20, amid progressive backlash over his April 10 comments on personal behavior and stepping up for “your abuela.”

The surgeon general’s allies say the viral comments were spread out of context and he’s been an advocate for tackling racial disparities. Image
