New Oxygen Not Included seed for me: SNDST-A-1551103718-0

Still cashing in my day off. As with last time, I won't walk through the first 60-80 days in any detail. Image
Interesting. That's a *huge* starter biome. A lot of water, but spread far and wide. That's okay, I'll tap the one just right of the arch and take my time gathering the rest together. Already leaning towards putting my two-columns as far left as they'll go.
Okay, today's part of a working day, but last night wasn't, so here's c83 of this seed. Image
All the usual suspects inside the base. Only one slight difference: it was convenient this time to dump the water at the base of the left column, which make it a more nearly perfect rectangle to feed my OCD streak.
I have 10 dups, and this time got an okay mix, the PRNG has let up in its vendetta. So it feels like it's going much better. I notice, at this point, I don't think it really *is* that much better?
Two geysers off to the lower right of the base, an ng, and a cool steam. They both went dormant at almost the same time, so I'm capping both, but the cool steam's got 10 cycles of dormancy left, so first concentration is there. Image
Remembering my mistake from last time, I'm going to use the temporary tap, maybe beefed up with one cooling pipe, to just grab the water and stash it to the reservoir without shooting for the whole thing. Consider me "lesson learned". :)
Okay, c93. Both geysers capped and tapped. Outer envelope of the NG is being pumped to vacuum,, then I'll clean all that up.

This means that morning soda & cigarettes are complete, and it's time for me to write or shoot video. I'll play more at breaks, and keep you posted. Image
Here we are at c103. The NG and cool steam are both producing. The cool steam will overpressure before I'm ready to cool it, but I'll live with it. Steel & plastic coming along. Next stop -- see last time failure -- time for o2 production. Image
Perhaps oddly, what I'm doing is casting about for cooling. Two options, 1) find an AETN and use it to create a cold tank that the o2 can run through. Haven't seen one yet. 2) I'm inches from having enough steel & plastic for an aquatuner+turbine answer.
Option 2 has the big upside that I can use it cool my base at the same time I slightly cool the o2. But it's energy-intensive, and I'm still on coal only. Option 1 is much cheaper, but it will also take longer, and I haven't even done the first thing yet, find an AETN.
Fine. I did my dumb Sunday work, a muse and a video -- next episode of Real Programming out in a couple of days -- and now it's back to my game for the last little dab of weekend.
Alright, well, I have one more easy ice biome to check, then we're going with aquatuner + turbine. I only have 900 kg of steel right now, not enough lime yet. As I move to that last biome, maybe I'll pop a salt biome and see if I can score a molt or two to beef the lime up.
Well. Would ya looky here?

See that water in the oil biome? That's a biome collision/overlap, and the biome it came from is ice. Everything down to just below that ruin is in the 50-70c range. I can get fossil for steel and even a little cool oil from there w/o burning alive. Image
Cool. I got 2500 kg of fossil, maybe 5000 kg of oil. That let me get the steel quickly over 1500 kilos, which is all I needed to set up full-scale cooling. Oxygen *and* base cooling maybe 20-30 cycles out.
Gonna go with a full rodriguez, which is my favorite of the o2 rigs. It puts out three "always-full" 1k/s lines. I'll use one for each exosuit bank (8 apiece), and the third for the base. I'll set up the aquatuner+turbine with a cooling pool outside it, later to run through base.
The rodriguez is self-powered after a cycle or two, but the tuner is an energy hog. Still, I'm sitting on 30 tons of coal now, and the truth is, I can't get to more power without o2. Maybe I'll just chill an ice-box w/o routing through the base to get started.
This is an ambitious build, and I'm a little nervous. The rodriguez I know by heart, but the cooling rig, not so well.
Here's the blueprint of the hard part. The long tile line top-center is the top of the rodriguez. The three pipes empty out into the icebox. The liquid pipes are drawn for the initial usage, but I drew in the expanded cooling for later to cool the whole base in addition. Image
Good lord. That almost killed me. Here's the finished monster, finally working correctly. Image
The gas pipes... Image
And the liquid pipes... Image
What a horror story. If you'd've asked me, I'd've said, "no worries about the rodriguez, i know it by heart, it's the cooling that's scaring me." In fact, that's what i *did* say.
Nope. Cooling rig worked from day 1. But I built the rodriguez from memory, and I got it wrong, and gradually grasping I'd built the wrong thing took an extra 10 or 12 cycles.

Anyway, that's c165. cool o2 is sorted, exosuits are sorted. The base isn't cooled yet, it's oil time.
And good night. Hope you enjoyed these long silly streams of ONI content. I needed a break. :)

In today's episode of Stupid Geek Tricks, I just basically invented Smalltalk using Kotlin.

Before you get angry, please know that I don't approve of this. I don't approve of a lotta shit I do.
120 lines of code. A marker interface for messages, a one-API interface for objects. Any class can handle any message it chooses to. Didn't bother with doesNotUnderstand, but it'd be an easy add.

Conceptually, it's straightforward: the Interactor wraps a Thing to give it a jump table that switches on the message subclass. It calls the Thing's register() to fill out that jump table. Any given Thing class can register any given Message+Handler pair.

What is my favorite 20th c song from Broadway?

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you asked.

[Editor's note: Nobody asxked this. No one. Not one. Nobody asked this.]
Well, of course, it's "At The Ballet" from _A Chorus Line_.

I grew up on stage, community and then semi-pro theatre. I worked 4-8 production a year from the time I was 7 until about 20 years old.

In *Kansas*, yo, in Kansas.

Anyway, all and sundry, "geepawhill" is not a common moniker. Find me that way. I'm on mastodon, but I also have a whole website, geepawhill.org.
Backstory: "geepaw" means "grandfather", and now, to look at me, it seems obvious. Of *course* this bitter old fucker is a grandfather, just look at him. But "GeePaw" is actually a name I've had for over 30 years.
See, my wife is a little older than me, and when we first got to the bouncy-bouncy, her kids were already almost grown. I was present in the hospital room when my grandson was born. (It was gross.) And I became a grandfather at the ripe old age of 31.

Please, I'm sorry, please, remember through all this Elon-is-evil-and-stupid shit, remember, please, I'm sorry, please.

This ass-clown *bought* this place where you made community, he didn't steal it. And he *bought* it from the people who sold it to him.
Baby, you were so sure you were the customer, all along, and so mad to discover you were product, all along.
*Fucking* mastodon. There's servers. There's CW's, and bitchy people on your server telling you to CW your random rage-tweets. There's no funded algo stuffing your timeline, just your server's locals and your follows and their follows.

Jussi Bjorling, "Nessun Dorma".

I once did a bake-off. It was in the early days with spotify, and spotify is the king-hell site for bake-offs. Type in "nessun dorma" and get 500 takes.

So I listened to maybe 200 or so, and I put together a CD of about 20 of them.
And one night -- yes there were substances involved -- I played it for my wife, and we listened to all 20 takes, and we chose our top 3. No commentary. We just listened, and chose our favorites.

Late at night, when no one's around, or they're all abed, or I'm drunk and I don't care, I sing this to the trees outside my house.
My range is very narrow, and it straddles right there, alto and tenor, and I'm old, a practioner of many vices, across many decades. But I sing it, and it fits in my range, and singing it makes me feel good.
