The European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) is NOT the EU.
It is an international treaty drafted in 1950 by the Council of Europe (absolutely NOT the EU) and the UK played the major part in drafting it. It is something for us to be proud of.
It was not the Human Rights Act that the UK created to adopt laws handed down by the EU. It was the European Communities Act. The European Communities Act was brought in to provide a mechanism for adopting EU laws at a national level.
So we need to ask ourselves this... If the Human Rights Act has NOTHING to do with our relationship (or no relationship) with the EU... Then why do our Govt want to scrap it or replace it?
Here is a list of our freedoms that the (the UK's) Human Rights Act protects ->
Article 2: Right to Life. (OUR right to life)
Article 3: Prohibition of Torture (stops US being tortured)
Article 4: Prohibition of slavery and forced labour (Means WE will never ever be slaves)
Article 5: Right to Liberty and Security. (WE must be free and secure)...
Article 6: Right to a Fair Trial. (If WE break the law then we must have a fair trial).
Article 7: No Punishment Without Law. (Do WE want to be punished if WE do not break a law?)
Article 8: Respect For Your Private and Family Life (I don't think this needs explaining.)...
Article 9: Freedom of Thought, Conscience and Religion (We can be FREE to believe what we want to believe)
Article 10: Freedom of Expression (We can say what we want to say as long as we don't harm others.)
Article 11: Freedom of Assembly and Association (no harm though)...
If you looked out of your window every day and repeatedly caught a group of companies cataloguing all of the contents of your waste bin, would you be outraged? If so then why?
@carolecadwalla@CNN@donie@FBoversight It is, perhaps, difficult to distinguish between 'Benji the Binman', exercising his skills in 'Binology' to questionably glean information then selling access to it to the News of The World, and any web based business that takes advantage of us not padlocking lock our bins.
