BREAKING: The South Dakota Attorney General reported hitting a deer Saturday night but had actually hit and killed a man whose body wasn’t discovered until the next morning, according to the Department of Public Safety. Story coming ASAP. Then will update with info from relatives
Preview:

“My cousin got run over by the Attorney General,” Nick Nemec said about his relative Joe Boever.

“A deer doesn’t look like a human,” said Nick’s brother Victor.
Here's my brief story. I'm now working to update with info from the cousins.

BREAKING:Ravnsborg released a statement at 10:07 p.m. his time w/ lots of details. Biggest things: He says both he+the sheriff missed the victim's body when they searched the area. Then the sheriff let him drive his car home. Then he returned+discovered the body. Keep reading 1/x
The statement has the AG's Office letterhead on it but it came through his campaign email, not his work email to the media. The office's spokesman told me he has no idea about this letter. Story coming. 2/x
Again, a sheriff and the top law enforcement official (whose jobs it is to investigate crimes) say they missed an injured man when they searched at night. 3/x

The U.S. Marshals decided to transfer a pregnant, high-risk woman from South Dakota to a medical prison in Texas in the middle of a pandemic.

Andrea Circle Bear, a 30-year-old from Eagle Butte, died today. Her baby survived.

Beyond tragic. 1/x
I plan to do followup reporting on this. I hope to get in touch with her family and also ask federal officials why they couldn't delay her transfer given her case was already dragging on since summer 2018.

H/T @keegan_hamilton for flagging this tragic death.

Circle bear was serving just over two years on a low-level drug case involving an informant.

Here's what the U.S. Attorney said when she was sentenced:

“Don’t let yourself or your property get mixed up in the world of illegal drugs. It ends badly.”

Thread on what's happening inside the South Dakota women's prison after an inmate tested positive for COVID-19. My story is based on interviews with two inmates and five mothers:

1/x
Multiple sources say the inmate who tested positive recently cleaned the empty Capitol building and is now isolated in a solitary confinement cell ... making others afraid to report symptoms since they don't want to go to solitary

2/x
Women who feel sick are scared to tell staff because they're "afraid of being thrown in the hole," an inmate said.

A mother said her daughter isn't feeling well "but doesn’t want to say anything," because if she's put in solitary, she won't be able to call her.
