OH CHRIST—Trump HHS just did full “power grab” takeover of all drug/vaccines. Via “stunning declaration” of authority, HHS Secretary Azar barred FDA from signing any new rules—power now “is reserved to the Secretary.” Trump now controls all of it. #COVID19 nytimes.com/2020/09/19/hea…
2) “Outside observers were alarmed by the new memo and worried that it could contribute to a public perception of political meddling in science-based regulatory decisions. Dr. Mark McClellan, who formerly headed the F.D.A. For Bush said the policy change was ill-timed...
3) “We’re in the midst of a pandemic, when trust in the public health agency is needed more than ever,” he said. “So, I’m not sure what is to be gained with a management change with respect to F.D.A. when they are doing such critical work.”

ICE caused a #COVID19 outbreak in Virginia. How? DHS wanted to fly ICE agents to DC to quell protestors. But DHS private jets allowed only if detainees aboard. So ICE took some detainees along to ferry ICE agents. This led to VA detention center outbreak. washingtonpost.com/coronavirus/ic…
2) this was so absurdly wrong on so many levels. But to use detainees and human puppets for ICE agents to then be used to quell protestors is something else. And on top causing a Covid outbreak. WTH.
3) “After the transfer, dozens of the new arrivals tested positive for the novel coronavirus, fueling an outbreak at the Farmville, Va., immigration jail that infected more than 300 inmates, one of whom died.” 😡😡

⚠️Airplane outbreak on a February London==>Hanoi Vietnam Airlines flight ✈️. Two key findings:

📌In business class, attack rate was 62% (13/21)

📌Among pax seated w/in 2 meters (2 biz seats) from case 1, 11 (92%) were #SARSCoV2 positive!

➡️ Flights not safe. #COVID19 🧵 below
2) Of the 15 persons with flight-associated cases, 12 (80%) had traveled in business class with case 1, and 2 travelers (cases 14 and 15) and 1 flight attendant (case 16) had been in economy class.
3) the London woman had traveled to Milan and Paris for Paris Fashion Week (conventions again!!!) just before her London flight to Hanoi on March 1st.

➡️ we know these international travel is what makes pandemic spread so fast across globe.

WOW—Emails from Caputo and his science adviser show how the two refused to accept CDC science and sought to silence the agency. Lashed out at CDC staff and falsely claimed kids have “zero” risk of death. #COVID19 nytimes.com/2020/09/18/us/…
2) I’m still beyond shocked by the details in the piece. It’s one long train wreck. And the hubris of Paul Alexander (Caputo’s aide) to think he knows better than the entire legion of CDC scientists is jaw dropping level of arrogance and stupidity.
3) “Mr. Caputo moved to punish the C.D.C.’s communications team for granting interviews to NPR and attempting to help a CNN reporter reach him about a public-relations campaign. Current and former C.D.C. officials called it a five-month campaign of bullying and intimidation.”

😢 TERRIBLE—**7** people have now died of #COVID19 from that illegally-gathered Maine wedding. Worse is none of 7 who died even attended the wedding. They were secondary, tertiary, & 4th degree contacts of wedding guests. Young people just can’t party. theguardian.com/us-news/2020/s…
2) Some argue for “shielding” to protect old people. But that isn’t enough. People imagine it’s just elderly who succumb but it can be almost anyone with risk factors or even some without any risk factors. And then there is long term chronic illness. We can’t just shield 🛡.
3) aside: we should be very grateful to the diligent contact tracing efforts of @MEPublicHealth in doing South Korea-level detailed contact tracing!!! This wedding outbreak is by far one of the most detailed US tracing efforts to date. HT to its director Dr. @nirav_mainecdc.
