BREAKING: The Trump campaign is running Facebook ads portraying Bernie Sanders as the puppet master behind Joe Biden.
There’s a long, dangerous history of Jews being scapegoated as all-powerful puppet masters.
Trump is using this antisemitic lie to spread fear & division.
The "puppet master” characterization has been used to present Jews as shadowy manipulators, secretly orchestrating events on the political or financial main stage.
It is an age-old antisemitic trope — one that has been used in Nazi propaganda & continues to be used to this day.
Conspiracy theories about Jewish “puppet masters” motivated white nationalist shooters in Pittsburgh, Poway, El Paso, & Christchurch.
This deadly impact hasn’t stopped Trump & his GOP enablers from repeating them in order to divide us & hold on to power.
The @GOP used the same puppet master trope on their official website in July.
They accused Bernie Sanders, the most prominent Jewish American politician, of being Joe Biden’s puppet master — a classic antisemitic conspiracy theory.
It’s not an accident. It’s their platform.
The Trump campaign also sent a fundraising letter in July singling out Jewish donors & accusing Democrats of trying to “undermine” the “America First agenda.”
They claimed George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, & Tom Steyer are trying to "rig" the election.
Jewish people have been part of the story of the U.S. since its inception, from the promises of its founding, to the many ways the country has failed to live up to those promises, to the fights to make those promises a reality.
🧵 1/
And in this critical moment for American Jews, we can celebrate one important aspiration of our American dream: a true democracy, where all voices are heard and all people are free.
2/
Our ancestors experienced violence and oppression at the hand of authoritarian movements, dictatorships, and laws that restricted their rights and threatened their safety.
3/
I was saddened and shocked to hear you falsely call campus protesters "proxies" of the Iranian government. You run an organization that warns about how defamation can lead to violence.

@JGreenblattADL @ADL Your organization’s stated mission is to “stop the defamation of the Jewish people…”
And yet, you defamed Jewish people who have a different perspective than you.
You’re going to be hearing a lot more about what’s known as the “great replacement” conspiracy theory.
We’ve been tracking this conspiracy theory in recent years as it’s been increasingly embraced by the Republican party and its pundits.
Here’s why this matters. 🧵
Yesterday a white 18 yo allegedly drove to Buffalo, NY to murder Black people. His manifesto cites the same conspiracy that incited the deadliest antisemitic massacre in American history in Pittsburgh in 2018 & the attack on immigrants in El Paso in 2019.
“Great replacement” is a racist and antisemitic conspiracy theory which promotes the lie that Jewish people are behind efforts to replace white Americans, often through immigration or elections.
The McMinn County School Board in Tennessee has voted to ban Maus, the acclaimed graphic novel by Art Spiegelman about his family’s experience in the Holocaust.
Tomorrow is Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This is outrageous and part of a dangerous pattern.
Conservative school boards and right-wing legislators are working overtime to ban schools from educating about the history of racism, antisemitism, and bigotry.
They refuse to confront the truth about white supremacy because it enables them to hold on to power.
That’s why they mandate schools share books from Holocaust deniers and ban anti-racist education and Black writers.
This is happening in real time: the erasure of the Holocaust, slavery, genocide, and history in our schools and our politics.
Three years ago today, a man driven by conspiracies and lies took up arms in order to kill Jewish people and stop new immigrants, murdering eleven beloved community members at the #TreeOfLife - Or L’Simcha building in Pittsburgh.
The lies haven’t stopped.
From Charlottesville to Pittsburgh to Poway to El Paso, we’ve seen too often that some lies spill blood and some words echo as gunshots.
This is why we must continue the fight against white nationalism and antisemitism in all forms.
Three years after the #TreeOfLife massacre, the same antisemitic, anti-immigrant lie which motivated the gunman is still being repeated by pundits and politicians.
They’re using it to manufacture division and fear to grow their own power, no matter who gets hurt.
On the eve of the #TreeOfLife anniversary, @GOPLeader Kevin McCarthy just went on Fox News to spread fear & lies about a migrant caravan.
This is the same tactic the right used in 2018 — the same conspiracy theory that led to 11 Jews being killed in Pittsburgh three years ago.
Three years ago, a chorus of lies and conspiracy theories incited a series of bombs sent to media outlets and political figures, and culminated in the deadliest antisemitic massacre in our country's history.
The man who committed the attack on the #TreeOfLife building was motivated by replacement theory — the conspiracy theory that falsely claims Jews are bringing non-white immigrants to the United States.
It's the same lie pundits & politicians are pushing.
