1. There's a campaign being run about India taking a loan from the #AIIB to fight COVID. The allegation is along the lines of "how dare the govt take a loan from the 'Chinese-controlled' bank and is it a payoff for the land China has tried to capture"? Let's examine this:
2. India is the second-largest shareholder in #AIIB, with a paid-in capital of $1.67 billion in the bank. It's not quite clear why people would object to India taking a loan from a bank it has such a substantial stake in.
3. As for the 'Chinese-controlled' bit, it's common sense that although AIIB has its headquarters in Beijing, this does not make it a Chinese-controlled bank. That would be like saying the Philippines controls the Asian Development Bank because it is headquartered there.
4. Just to alleviate the concerns of those still clinging to the 'Chinese-controlled' narrative, please rest assured knowing that an Indian--Sameer Kumar Khare--is one of the directors in the Bank and another Indian--DJ Pandian--is the Vice President of the Bank for South Asia.
5. China is a minority shareholder in the #AIIB and nothing more.
6. Coming to the 'payment for the land we apparently "gave up" to the Chinese' allegation. State govts across party lines have taken #AIIB loans, and that's fine. But if it is such a problem, maybe @INCIndia wants to explain why Maharashtra & Rajasthan borrowed so much from AIIB?
7. States need financing and it's perfectly okay to turn to multilateral lending institutions for loans. During this pandemic and the associated economic crisis, even the Centre needs to borrow. @INCIndia has been asking the Centre to borrow. When it does, they can't complain.

Recently there have been a lot of aspersions cast on the Gehlot Govt's handling of Rajasthan's finances. We dived into the numbers to reveal the facts. They might surprise you. A short thread 👇🏽(1/6)
theprint.in/economy/is-geh…
- Rajasthan's gross fiscal deficit (FD) spiked more than average during pandemic, but also improved faster than average since then. Increase in FD less under Gehlot than Vasundhara Raje.

- Revenue receipts as % of GSDP highest in 10 yrs, higher than average for states

(2/6) Image
- Rajasthan's increasingly becoming independent of the centre as far as revenue is concerned

- The states own revenues, both tax and non-tax, as % of GSDP are now higher than average for all states, and are rising

- This runs contrary to the plight of many other states

The RBI's State of the Economy report is one of the most comprehensive documents if you want to know what's the latest on the Indian economy and, to an extent, the world economy. Here's a thread of some of the key data points from the latest edition of the report. (1/10)
Wage growth in the June 2021 quarter has been the highest in more than a year for almost all major sectors. Of course, there's the low base effect, but several high-employment sectors have seen strong growth in June 2021 despite growing in the same quarter last year. (2/10)
In fact, unemployment levels have been reasonably quick to return to trend following disruptions caused by the lockdowns--the all-India one in 2020 and the various regional ones in 2021. At the moment, unemployment is on a downswing from the spike due to the second wave. (3/10)

There is so much interesting data in this single release. Lots of insight into how the Centre has been prioritising vaccine deliveries to States. Here's a thread of some of the key insights.
There is a strong correlation between a State's share in total vaccines sent out by the Centre and that State's share in India's population. That correlation is 0.87. In simple terms, the most populous States received the highest shares of vaccine doses.
There is also a strong correlation (0.8) between a State's share in vaccine doses sent by the Centre and its share in total active cases. Simply, States contributing the most to active COVID-19 cases are also getting the highest share of vaccine doses.
