1/ .@amnesty denied access again today to the court in the #Assange extradition hearing. We've made 3 applications requesting recognition as expert fair trial monitors. Judge states that no "special provision" will be made for our trial monitor's attendance.
2/ International fair trial monitors:
• Evaluate the fairness of a trial/legal proceeding by providing an impartial record of what transpired.
• Advance internationally recognized fair trial standards by putting the the judge & parties on notice that they are under scrutiny.
3/ The general public has a right to the few seats in the public gallery; trial monitors should not be competing with the public to secure a seat that belongs to the public-at-large.
4/ The OSCE: “...the act of monitoring a trial...increases the transparency of the judicial process. In individual cases, trial monitoring may serve to improve the effective and fair administration of justice or bring attention to
serious deficiencies.”
5/ UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders: “By observing court proceedings...and analyzing legal practices, trial monitors demonstrate support for defenders and contribute more broadly to the strengthening of judicial systems.”
6/ #Amnestyinternational monitors have gone to Guantanamo Bay, Bahrain, Ecuador, Turkey, and Hungary, among many others, to observe trials as officially recognized fair trial monitors.
7/ It is a disgrace that the UK has failed to recognize that international fair trial monitors should be officially recognized & permitted access to the #Assange hearings. Open justice is not served by this failure, it is profoundly undermined.
