Last week, a horrific video emerged showing an unarmed, naked woman being beaten and executed by suspected members of Mozambique's armed forces (FADM). This happened near Awasse, a town in Cabo Delgado province, geolocation by @il_kanguru and @y_vdw shows.
Amnesty International independently verified the location, adding that four different gunmen shot the unarmed woman a total of 36 times with a variety of Kalashnikov rifles and a PKM-style machine gun. Her naked body was left on the highway. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
“We've just killed Al-Shabaab,” the men can be heard saying in Portuguese, referring to the armed group blamed for causing instability in the region since late 2017. A source told @amnesty that the woman had cast a spell on the Mozambican Army and refused to reveal a hideout.
While the video appeared on social media a couple of days ago, @amnesty found the video was shared privately on phones on September 7. Their sources think that was the day it was filmed, coinciding with FADM's “mega-operation” to remove insurgents from Awassse and Diaca.
While @amnesty and several Mozambican orgs have called for an impartial investigation, the Defence Ministry goes into full denial mode: this video, and others showing atrocious abuse, were faked. (But all open source verification suggests they're not.) clubofmozambique.com/news/mozambiqu…

An important point made here, on (the lack of) blurring a victim's face and body to protect their dignity.
When Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapsed in Syria, many of the officials who enabled and enforced his brutal regime disappeared. Our reporting uncovers who they are, what they did and where they fled. nyti.ms/3J1W5Cs
The story above is the first installment of our ongoing reporting project on Assad's key enforcers — those who oversaw torture, directed massacres, and ordered chemical attacks. Just a few of the hooros of the civil war that left half a million people dead.
After Assad's fall in December and with accountability looming, most of these officials fled or hid. Rumors swirled in their wake, leading to many dead ends. But in some cases, these clues brought us directly to their doorsteps.
Thread with @Maxar satellite imagery showing the aftermath of two locations in Pakistan struck by India overnight.
The first location is the Jamia Masjid Subhan Allah compound on the outskirts of Bahawalpur. Satellite images courtesy of @Maxar.
@Maxar Close to the mosque is another compound that was heavily damaged. First image is a closer crop, second image is a larger crop showing the main building as well.
Striking new satellite image from @Maxar of Altadena, heavily affected by the Los Angeles wildfires. The first image is natural color, the second show healthy vegetation in red and burned areas black/grey.

Thread with satellite imagery of the California wildfires.
Smoke and clouds largely obscured the northwestern sections of the LA suburbs (Palisades, Malibu), but shortwave infrared (SWIR) sensor helps penetrate that and extensive damage and hundreds of active fires can be seen. Location: 34.045, -118.540. 🛰️📸: @Maxar
@Maxar By blending the SWIR image of today with an older (pre-fires) optical image, it's possible to see where the fires are burning compared to the houses. This is The Summit neighborhood, Pacific Palisades. Location: 34.074, -118.563. 🛰️📷: @Maxar
New @Maxar satellite imagery from the past 48 hours shows the Russian military vehicles and equipment continue to be withdrawn from Khmeimim Air Base, and likely arrived at the Tartus naval base. Thread 🧵
This image from December 15 shows military trucks, armored personnel carriers (APC) and personnel assembled on the tarmac at Khmeimim Air Base. An Il-76 transport aircraft is parked nearby. 🛰️📸: @Maxar

This satellite image from today, via @Maxar, shows three key vessels in Iran's strategy of converting commercial ships into military platforms ancored near Bandar Abbas:
SHAHID BAGHERI (new drone ship, probable net-covered drone on deck)
SHAHID MAHDAVI
SHAHID ROUDAKI
This is a closer crop of the SHAHID BAGHERI, the newest of the three. Originally a commercial container ship, the vessel was converted into a military drone carrier and is now undergoing its first sea trials after departing the ISOICO shipyard in late November, per @Maxar.
A closer view of the SHAHID MAHDAVI, originally a Panamax container ship, it was converted into a military vessel in 2023. It reportedly can carry helicopters and drones, has air defense missiles and other armament onboard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRIS_Shah…
