1/ Curriculum #Medthread about our Global Health Track & Scholars Program!

The OHSU IM Global Health Program endorses a broad definition of #GlobalHealth rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration to promote better health for all

ohsu.edu/school-of-medi…

2/ As the program has grown over the years, one of the highlights of the program was a rotation at Scottish Livingstone Hospital in Molepolole, Botswana through our Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess partnership

3/ Program alumnus @AdamRodmanMD (host of @BedsideRounds) was a program participant, and then completed a #GlobalHealth fellowship!

Watch him talk about his experience at Scottish Livingstone Hospital here:

4/ Dr. Katie Ferguson, who graduated from our program this past June, is a current #GlobalHealth fellow!

(ps--photo from her GH rotation in Alaska--more on that to come!)

5/ One of the core tenants of our track is that “global health begins at home” & isn’t only about international rotations but services to underserved communities

According to Dr. Nyendak, APD until she relocated to Delhi, India, who was instrumental in the creation of the track: Image
6/ GH track R2s rotate "locally", with options such as...

-an Indian Health Service clinical rotation, options including:

🗺️sites in Round Valley, California
🗺️Chemawa Health Center, in Salem, OR
🗺️Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska

7/ other local rotation sites include:
✅corrections medicine
@VirginiaGarcia (provides medical care to migrant and farm workers & those with barriers to care)
@care_bridges (OHSU student run free clinic)
✅Community Resource and Referral Center (focused on homeless Veterans)
8/ #GlobalHealth and #PrimaryCare naturally overlap in many areas, including the focus on rural health and underserved care

We find there is natural synergy between the two programs in teaching topics, outreach to vulnerable populations, and interdisciplinary collaborations
9/ our partnerships also bring multidisciplinary collaboration with other learners at OHSU, including those rotating at the same sites plus innovative noon conferences, like one held with @OHSUradchiefs @OHSURadiology on chest xray findings during the Botswana rotation
FIN/ while COVID has changed rotations in the short term, the big picture remains:

a #GH skill set is widely transferrable & involves:
🌎reasoning w limited resources
🌎understanding social determinants of health
🌎humility to always be willing to learn

We are eager to learn from this #GrandRounds by @OHSU_ID faculty @lstrnad5 and @SikkaMon regarding the overlap between complex bacterial infections and SDOH ImageImage
Looking at rates of IUD-associated bacterial infection versus other Oregon demographics.

These infections are more common in poorer and more rural areas Image
Racial disparities also exist in Oregon. Black individuals accord for a disproportionate % of IUD infection related admissions versus the 2% of general population Image

1/ We are going to start a series of threads, starting with this #tweetorial, to share more info about our program & curriculum. We will collate in a Twitter moment!

First topic—our Social Medicine Curriculum & Block:

ohsu.edu/school-of-medi… Image
2/ Why is this such a valued part of our residency program curriculum for > a decade?

Healthcare & health outcomes are about far more than just access to medical care and treatments. Social determinants of health (SDoH) are crucial to these outcomes

annals.org/aim/fullarticl…
3/ Our Social Medicine curriculum includes an ambulatory block rotation & longitudinal learning across 3 years

We aim to:
⬆️resident knowledge of health disparities & system gaps
⬆️sociocultural awareness of SDoH
✅provide culturally responsive care for stigmatized patients

We’re proud to see residency training programs like @UofMPesRes stand up for health, justice, and the safety of their trainees and their community on. 1/x
In this week’s case, this means speaking out against racism. Too often, speaking up for justice and safety of human beings means speaking out against racism. 2/x
We at @OHSUIMRes believe that #blacklivesmatter. 3/x

Our chiefs laid out 3 broad strategies, with some specific actions we can take to remove remaining barriers for women in leadership.
1) Address Bias
2) Improve Work/Life Balance
3) Consciously Advance Women
Address bias: women at our institution have more concerns about not being acknowledged at conference, not being credited for their work. Image
Improve Work Life/Balance:
Women at our institution are more concerned than men about criticism taking time off for the more than 7 years!! of unpaid work they will perform over their lifetimes. Image
